Look at all the blackness in panel 1. It’s like Death has come along for the ride. Too bad it’s suddenly winter and the last leaf has definitely fallen.
It’s completely contrary to the facts established in the arc that brought her to Funky’s house in the first place, but OK. Too bad Wally is still hogging the Montoni’s apartment, as that would be ideal, but I don’t see Wally moving out anytime soon. Man, the sad-sackery THAT place has seen…Pete, Boy Lisa, Wally…yikes. If those old walls could talk they’d be yawning.
Didn’t Boy Lisa drive through there once? The Bad Part Of Town…Eastern Westview, over on the other side of the tracks, the PJs, where even pizza delivery drivers fear to tread. And you gotta watch your back there too, as that’s where the Maudlin Street Boyz, Westview’s most feared street gang, ply their trade. There’s a bodega over at the corner of Maudlin and Sorrow where they sell loose bootleg pizza slices, or “loosies” as Westviewians say.
Or there’s always Bedside Manor, where the elderly, infirm and dying go to smoke cigarettes, engage in “hanky-panky” and jam with zany jazz bands. Melinda is still quite wry for her age, she’ll fit right in with that madcap bunch.
So Mother-In-Law wants to be independent, and likes to watch TV. Since this strip lives to give characters aspirations and then destroy them in the cruelest way possible, I’m guessing blindness.
Just where are they going for the weekend? The weekend after Thanksgiving is prime pizza season…at least according to my cousin who actually runs a pizza shop. He goes on vacation after New Years and then returns before Super Bowl weekend.
But yeah, let’s take a drive during one of the busiest travel weekends. Holly is such an idiot, no wonder Funky was driven to drink.
If you go by Crankshaft, Thanksgiving was two weeks ago. Or ten years and two weeks ago. So maybe the traffic has died down.
I’m more puzzled how they were able to go away for the weekend without making a huge fuss over which unqualified random person should be in charge of Montoni’s – anyone other than Wally, of course.
Funky Winkerbean made its debut on March 27, 1972. Click here for a countdown of days until the fiftieth anniversary and hopefully Tom Batiuk's retirement.
She could always bunk with Bull. That’s the kind of thing Batiuk would do to the man. Never let a grudge die!

She could move into that public housing project Wally used to live in. Red brick everywhere! Free clotheslines!

Ha, ha! An old person thinks she has style, and wants to be independent! What hilarity!
Oh. She wants to change where they find her bloated corpse. That’s something.
By “cramping her style”, she means she wants more of Funky’s Dad’s D, or did Batiuk drop that plot beat the same way he dropped Bull’s story?
