Intern-minable

Wait: one gets “choked up” recalling fond memories, no?  So what is it about the dressing down that intern Candy received from MyDadJohnDarling that makes her get emotional all these years later? Maybe it was the way his little hand seemed to completely detach from his wrist. Like a cursor. By the way, if you’re just joining us: nobody who knew him liked John Darling.

  1. “Those utterly blank, dead-eyed mannequin faces in panel one are creeping me out. ”

With the interviews going the way they are, why would she even want to watch the results rather than shredding the VCR tape? And to let Dogbert see them?

It’s like Al Capp said when SDS made him their man of the year in 1967 or 68, “It’s like finding out that Adolf Eichmann was your uncle.”

And, BTW, even though her dad, John Darling, was murdered, wouldn’t the appropriate charge for that have been LITTERING?

  2. The only way that this mess makes sense in normal, human terms is if she’s trying to get Plantman a full pardon. “See, Mr President? Everybody wanted him dead so it’s okay that someone actually did it!!”

  3. Yes…instead of interviewing her Mother…the wife of John Darling who was murdered, Jessica will go to the Westview prison to interview Plantman. That’ll be good for a week or two

  4. “The only way that this mess makes sense in normal, human terms is if she’s trying to get Plantman a full pardon.”

    Not likely.

That would make for an uplifting set of panels.

  5. Only in the Funkyverse can getting threatened with unemployment by your boss be considered a heartwarming moment. Well I guess we should treasure these rare moments of actual human moments. They are few and far between in this strip.
    .

  6. John Darling often wore ties made out of the same shedding mammal material as Les’ couch… the things you learn in Batiukverse flashbacks.

  7. Revealing my ignorance once again, I must ask–who is Plantman? Is that the actual killer? Did we ever learn the name of the actual killer, or was that knowledge that Les felt we weren’t mature or intelligent enough to be told? (There–I referenced the Watcher’s origin story!)

  8. Jess is making Durhey watch her raw footage. She’s more despicable than John Darling, her father, who was murdered.

All of the opprobrium directed towards her father is a surprise to Jess, because she read Les Moore’s book about the murder. The book is 179 pages of puns.

  9. Suggested title: “They are all glad he’s dead – the story of John Darling my father, who was murdered. in the words of the people who knew him.”
A bit long but I think it works.

  10. Candy Kane: “I’ll never forget those first words John Darling said to me when I was introduced as his intern.”

John Darling: “Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah!”

Candy Kane: “They haunt me to this day.”

    John Darling: “MmmmmBOP!”

Candy Kane: “I still get choked up thinking about it.”

John Darling: “Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wooden shoe?”

Darin: “Do I have to watch this?”

    Jess: “Yes. Yes, you do.”
