I'll Be GLAAD When This is Over

“Camelot” is the prom theme for 2012, huh? That’s timely…bet it was the theme for Batiuk’s own prom at Midview High back in ’65.

Linda and Becky are still (weeks later) discussing Mr. Blackburn’s public dressing-down of his wife in front of the whole high school. Becky shares that her hitherto meek Dad, the father of four girls, “hardly said two words the entire time” she was growing up. TB must think that having him finally find his voice in order to publicly tear his wife a new one over her opposition to the same-sex prom couple makes Mr. Blackburn seem heroic. I think it makes him seem pathetic.

Cojones Grown

Well, today’s strip is just so epic that I’m gonna invoke “fair use” and reproduce it here. Today’s our payoff, snarkers, our “ending earned”; here’s where it all comes together. Why did TB dredge up not just Roberta, but her limp dishrag of a husband? Why did Nate, instead of dealing with Roberta in his office one-on-one, assemble “every student, teacher, and parent volunteer“? Why, it was all setup in order to provide old, fat, evil Roberta’s very public dénouement, at the hands of the aforementioned wimp husband, no less.

In all honesty, panel 3 had me confused for a moment: I didn’t get why Summer was gasping “Dad?” while Dad was standing way behind her. Then I noticed the highlights in her hair were not blue, but brown, and realized I was looking at Becky. Please, please let her startled expression not be due to Dad finally asserting himself, but rather because she’s just witnessed her father being shanked by her berserk, hateful mother.

I Don't Dink So

Professional retiree Harry Dinkle brings to three the number of senior citizens hanging around Westview high school for no apparent reason. I’ve got a feeling he wouldn’t be too crazy about the idea of a same-sex couple (a male couple, anyway) going to prom. He’s just better at hiding his prejudice than righteous Roberta. Becky tries to foist off on Dinkle the job of talking her mother “down off her high horse”, based on the fact that he had to deal with Roberta when she was a band mom, some three decades ago.

    • Today’s Breast Cancer Awareness PSA comes courtesy of Cayla, who is performing a self-exam and wearing a pink shirt in panel 1.
  • Also in P1, TB didn’t put much effort into drawing Becky’s face or hair, but as always, he gets That Empty Sleeve just right.
  • Westview’s red Scapegoat mascot, aka Satanic Snoopy, makes its second appearance in as many days.
  • According to Linda, Roberta now is trying to prohibit not just our nameless gay boys but all same-sex couples from partaking in prom.

We get it! Roberta Blackburn is a horrid, miserable woman! Bring on the gay teens already!

I usually don’t post specific spoilers about upcoming strips, but I figure this one’s okay.

So Linda’s gone from seeing Roberta putting up a sign, walked into the break room, gotten herself some coffee and had a conversation with Becky. All this has happened, and three days or so from now, ROBERTA WILL STILL BE PUTTING UP THE SAME STUPID SIGN.

You think it’s easy padding out a story arc for a whole month? Say it with me, people: endings…have…to…be…earned! At this rate, Sunday’s non-gay-prom themed throwaway gag will be a most welcome palate-cleanser.
