OK, I think today’s strip is actually funny. Although “pedantic schoolmarm from a bitter hollow” far better describes Cory’s former “language arts” teacher, Mr. Les Moore, than it does Funky, who is merely bitter (and, well, hollow).

The CW in the Army? I like it…in the unlikely event that TB follows through on the implication in this strip, that is.
Less shocking than Cory’s announcment that he’s enlisting is the fact that Batiuk is indeed following through from the Sunday strip three weeks ago. As was noted when we saw Cory doing those chinups at the recruitment booth, an aimless, able-bodied young man such as he might benefit from a stint in the military. Looks like it’s already having an effect on the boy: he’s already ditched his Wilma Flintstone necklace.
Funky's Turn
Today’s strip at least supplies a little ex post facto context for Les’ curious “coma” quip: poor guy’s just looking forward to a little respite from life’s unceasing demands. Holly and Cory seem to materialize from out of nowhere. “Dad…we need to talk.” Now there’s an understatement! Think this is going to go well?
This Way to the Egress
Led by faithful Flippy, I mean Buddy, Wally and Rachel head for the fairground exits. They pass by Cory and his equally jerky-looking friends testing their mettle at the Army recruiting booth. Not sure what we are supposed to make of Wally’s sidelong glance as he passes by. Certainly his own stint in the service was no picnic: in addition to being a P.O.W. and mistakenly presumed dead and buried in abstentia, Wally survived a land mine, chopper crash and even being blown up in a video game. Still, I would suggest that for an able-bodied, directionless young punk like Cory, military service might be just the thing.

Guest blogger DavidO here again, making a quick entry from the road, trying to be as funny as I can at a Motel8 lobby’s shared PC while a couple argues loudly about estate planning in the hotel breakfast bar no less than 10 feet from me.
Cory, Westview’s favorite badboy, has been reduced to that “kid sleeping in class character” for a quick gag. We’re so rarely given any glimpses of the Winkerbean homelife that it’s impossible to tell what’s keeping him up at night. Meanwhile, we’re treated to a possible sighting of Cell Phone girl and Celebrating Guy from Westview’s big win!
As the school year grinds down (In real life, a good amount of school years across the country are already over) it’s looking more and more like Westview’s kids might be keep in class well into August as TB tries to make up ground lost to the utterly pointless Promeggedeon storyline.
