Oh, come on. This joke might’ve raised a smile before polio had been eradicated in this country. But what 21st century teenager is going to not automatically associate “wearing braces” with teeth?

Practice is Everything
Here’s today’s waste of newsprint and ink.

March 28, 2011 at 11:15 amSo a self-admitted mediocre trumpet player that the band director claims gives the rest of the band performance anxiety was given the LEAD SOLO at that big concert in Cincinnati a few months back? The stories, they do not fit together too well…

March 28, 2011 at 4:30 pm…TB sorta glosses over the fact that Owen was First Trumpet, Lead Solo not too long ago.
Owen’s lack of trumpet practice causes Becky to throw up her hand in despair. The “punchline” is that Owen only dimly perceives that his teacher is criticizing his work ethic (or lack of same). Where a real-world kid might say, “You’re right, Ms. Howard, I’m sorry”, or offer some excuse for not practicing, Owen has to process what he’s hearing.
I have created a new post category, “clueless students”, to be used for strips where Westview’s teens demonstrate such an utter lack of comprehension.
Young Man with a Horn
Today’s comic.
The FWTNG* hijinks continue. I guess Becky is never going to let poor Owen live down that I-left-my-trumpet-home incident. At least TB spares us the sight of Becky’s infamous pinned-up sleeve.

Shelf Life
His “ex” Mallory may be “the world’s perfect genome”, but Cody needs to be sterilized, stat. As if his lousy potential as a breadwinner didn’t make him a poor candidate for fatherhood: witness his complete disdain for his progeny. He’s set them on a shelf somewhere with the rest of his widdle toys. Perhaps barren Owen and Sara can pursue custody.
Getting into Her Genes
As a teen, your author was a nerd and a band geek, too, but my nerd friends and I could still appreciate an attractive girl…and of all the descriptions we might have used for a hot chick, I doubt “the world’s perfect genome” would’ve been among them. Is Owen concerned only with her potential as breeding stock? Is this an Aryan thing? And do high schools allow students to “drop” classes?
