Bull shows more genuine passion than anyone in Funkytown has expressed for anything since the Blessed Saint Lisa ascended into the heavens. This, of course, makes him an object of ridicule and derision.

It also invites a very public dressing-down from Fishstick Annie (greatest character nickname since Station Wagon Susan!), whose plan to regain control of “her” team seems to be progressing swiftly. Meanwhile, TB, who had been making some strides in his struggle to depict African Americans in a flattering manner, takes a couple steps backwards in panel 2.

Raging Bull

Well would ya look at Bull, actually up and moving around and, well, coaching for once! And Summer delivering a forearm smash to a defender (is that legal?)! Yes, the She-Goats are bringin’ it! Meanwhile, Linda grimly delivers the punchline, the whole time secretly wishing for for her husband’s ticker to give out right on the court.

Looking for sense in a Funky Winkerbean story arc? That way lies madness! Silly Epicus: Ann’s been lurking in the wings this whole time, just waiting for the She-Goats to falter so that she could dust off the ol’ “weave-screen” play!

Bag o' Tricks

Before Ann can succeed in boring the girls to tears, Bull mercifully cuts her short to get us to the point of this little history lesson. But the former coach will not be dismissed, and we find out what she’s got in that shoulder bag she’s been fiercely clutching.

He couldn’t just make her a forgotten former successful coach willing to impart her wisdom upon the She-Goats, oh no. She’s gotta have a back story involving some sort of struggle she had to overcome and succeed in spite of, just like every other FW character. Or else she wouldn’t really fit in, right?

Epicus’ comment nails it. At the time, she tried to keep a brave face behind those Catwoman glasses…but the lack of R-E-S-P-E-C-T afforded to the first-generation She-Goats still sticks in Ann’s craw ~~thirty~~ ~~forty~~ ~~fifty~~ who the hell knows how many years later.
