Hopefully we’re done with football for the time being, and can get back to Westview High School business as usual: Les’ yellow shirt, bricks, banners haphazardly taped to the walls, and the teachers (and the cartoonist) displaying how out of touch they are with young people. A zombie theme would actually be quite fitting for The Student Council Homecoming Dance: the somber, dead-eyed students walk the halls as if in a trance.

Oh no, yuck. I miss Jarod already. Other than Les (always the default winner in any FW “worst-of” category), Linda is probably my least favorite WHS faculty member. Always grumbling and complaining with the wry sarcastic banter and the weary pained expressions, like dealing with those little “jerks” is always just such a dismal chore to endure. Such a nasty, hateful little troll. Serves her right that she’s stuck having to talk to Les, they deserve each other.
Hey, at least the WHS students have more imagination than the adults in town do, otherwise they’d be having their little dance at Montoni’s on a Sunday morning. Also highly ironic that a guy who routinely talks to his dead wife would be even slightly taken aback by a zombie-themed dance, right?
“The Zombies Return”? Uh-oh, I smell a Lisa story arc in disguise.
A decayed wreck shuffling along in search of a brain? Sounds like the perfect metaphor for this strip.
“The Student Council Homecoming Dance”…as opposed to the dozens of other homecoming dances the school holds, I guess?
Speaking of Lisa, I was bracing myself for the annual Lisa’s Legacy Run arc…has the fictitious event gone the way of its real-life counterpart? Even the lisaslegacy.org domain has expired.
The zombies return from where? Have they been there already? I like precision in my undead semantics.
MKay,not those zombies! The hiptsters in the Student Council have arranged a reunion of that swingin’ 60’s combo!
It’s Westview. The zombies never left.
Would “mega” as used by Mrs. All-Smart today qualify for entry in the Batiuktionary?
TF–I was wondering about the Lisa’s Legacy thing as well. Isn’t that typically in September?
With all the “dead” students at the dance….this’ll be the perfect opportunity for Lisa to secretly approach Les and have another last dance.
Wait… So that’s it with J-Rod’s arc??? Does he become a hero athlete? Does he finally win over the acceptance of his team?? Does he learn in an “ABC afterschool special”-way that you should always be more sociable? Does he stay a blonde??? Do we finally learn that he’s Black Lenny’s and FTR’s gaybie?? So many interesting questions about this fascinating character..do we get to learn more about him? But no, Batiuk want’s to get back to his avatar…Les Moore.
Hey, nice cameo by Fat Albert’s pal Bill there in panel 2. Sadly, it looks like Westview High has already sapped him of his usually affable demeanor.
@Helskor: I’m adding “Mega” to the Batiuktionary on the grounds that, while “mega” apparently can be used as a standalone modifier as well as a unit prefix, it’s doubtful that anyone in the real world would use it as Linda uses it here.
@beckoning: the Lisa’s Legacy runs (real and fictional) took place during October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.Last October, TB took to his blog to address why the real event would no longer be taking place:
But fear not, race fans:
Um, whatever you say, TB! Speaking of the offical FW website, it looks like the site’s undergone a minor redesign, adding social media sharing links but adding no new content or features.
I wonder if we’ll see that gay couple from last year. Or at least more complaining over the theme.
Linda gotta mega attitude-a! Anyway zombies feed on brains, so they could dine lightly on Les and then starve for lack of sustenance amongst the rest of the Westview crowd.
“…as the master of the Funkyverse I can make all competing runs go away so that only the Lisa’s Legacy Run remains.”
Great! Can you make the runs you’ve given all of us go away, too?
Note the dialogue. Note that you could completely change what Les says, change nothing of what the woman (who I can’t remember) says and her responses probably would make about as much sense.

Mmm hmm…
Hey kids, try it yourselves!
TFH…so I looked at the new official FW site…went further and looked at agian at the character profiles: Linda Lopez aka Mrs. Bull, she has another daughter ???? Mickey???
Geeze what it is with these deadbeat parents in Westview that seemingly just abandon their children?
Cory, Rana, Jinx, Crazy harry’s 3 kids, Wally jr, Rachels boy, Harry Dinkles daughter , summer & Super K and of course Stroke Freds never mentioned daughter (I can’t remeber names)
Merry Pookster: My favorite forgotten character in those FW “group shot” profiles…the women’s basketball coach (Sally something) who was obviously completely forgotten last year when TB did the Fishstick Annie arc. If you’re going to just totally drop a character from the strip, it might be wise to omit that character from the group pics, no?
@Pookster: I’ll have to dig out my copy of “Could Be a Book Deal Here” and scan some c. 1996 strips. Yes, Linda had longer hair and a wisecracking teenage daughter. And Linda’s an algebra teacher, huh?
…Hackett? I freaking love it.
But for the other one, who is Mallory Brooks? All I can find is from some actor (no definite image found) from The Young and the Restless.
Speaking of the offical FW website,
I like how he indicates that Rana was the daughter of John and Becky. No, you simp, Wally and Becky adopted her from Afghanistan after her family was blown up in a US embassy bombing as they were lining up to get paperwork to emigrate. (Isn’t that just what you’d expect in this strip? Never mind that the Rana’s older sister, the little girl who helped Wally escape Khan and his captors, was blown up as well and Wally didn’t seem to be the slightest bit broken up about that) John is Rana’s step-father, which he became when he wormed his way into the grieving widow’s life after the supposed death of Rana’s “real” adoptive father.
I mean, if he’s going to indicate that Jinx is Bull and Linda’s adopted daughter, (a factoid that has had no practical impact on the strip whatsoever) he should at least make some minor attempt to address Rana’s unusual family situation.
“The Lost Generation”:
Now Chiens’ disappearance is recent history compared to Carlo Mastriani. A tip of the ole Pooksters’ Fedora to anyone who can even claim to have once seen this character in any strip.
Bueller…Bueller?
