I was never a real collector, at best i would pick up ‘reading copies’ (the cheapest available–funny how DSH doesn’t mention that possibility to a customer).
(Hat tip to bad wolf, whose Dec. 11 comment I’ve been quoting for three days running.)
So Dead Skunk Head John was holding out all along. After befuddling and boring Holly all week with his collector’s jargon, lo and behold, the second of the seven mystical SJ covers is revealed.

Day 4 and there are still no comics in frame in this soi disant comic store…This is starting to get creepy.
As it happens, yours truly had occasion to visit a bona fide comic store today to get a secret Santa gift for a coworker. This guy happens to be a comics fan who incidentally seems reasonably mature and well-adjusted. So at lunchtime I took me to NYC’s Midtown Comics. I was really tempted to ask if they had any Starbuck Jones, but the staff was pretty busy and surely had no time for my foolishness. Still: comic books (and other wares) were clearly on display and available for perusal and purchase. And nary a chullo, goth chick or dead skunk head in sight.
We finally see a comic book in thie comic book store, but he keeps it stored in a filing cabinet? And then proceeds to not sell it?
Holly here has the same expression that Lucille Bluth always does when Mike Parmesan pops up in disguise. I can even hear the shrill squeal as her hands go into spasm!
OMG, a Batiuk character (that isn’t Mary) actually being nice and unselfish?
John: .oO(Thank God, I thought I was NEVER going to get rid of that PoS!)
It was hardly free, when you consider Holly had to sit through that entire speech laying out how Batiuk loves comic books more than you do. Imagine what that store smells like.
So the journey of “biblical proportions” consisted of DSHJ bending down to rifle through a box? That’s sounds about par for the Funkyverse. So what about the rest of the list? Is he going to help or what? Why are Owen and Gotharella looking at them like that? Everything about this arc is so vague and annoying, you can tell he was getting drowsy while he “wrote” it.
My dialog fits Owen, Alex and Holly’s panel three expressions better than his does.
Wait… that filing cabinet is labeled “CRAZY HARRY’S JUNK.” Nice gesture, Asshole!
And notice how John doesn’t make (as of yet) creepy overtures or thinly veiled suggestions of sexual reciprocity.
Harry Dinkle, when you look like a needy pervert next to a manchild who thinks that convenience store booze and M&Ms are suitable hors d’oeuvres, you seriously need to rethink your life.
Note the cover of the Starbuck comic. Yeah, clearly it’s just like Downton Abbey and not another dime-a-dozen 1970s sci-fi comic.
p4:
Holly: John, that is the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me! Thank you so much.
DSH: No thanks necessary, that’s what friends do for each other.
Holly (exiting the shop): That reminds me, Funky wanted me to tell you that if you’re late one more time with the rent, your fat ass is on the street. Merry Christmas!!
Not Graded, Slabbed nor a Holy Grail….. Now open the bag Mrs. Preske…..”Why this is a piece of shit……. But it’s really great shit Mrs Preske”
….another .10 cent comic? Comic Books went from 10 to 12 cents prior to 1964. So Cory was into comics written 30-40 years prior to his birth?
And how could Funky have purchased Starbucks #1 as a teen? Actually that would make sense because he does look more like he is around 70 years old.
@Merry Pookster, thanks a lot, now I’ll have Firesign Theatre catch phrases running thru my head all day.
Meanwhile over at “Crankshaft” those self absorbed, evil, lazy, technology loving teenagers are at it again.
Here, have this worthless comic, in lieu of rent.
Thanks for the hat tip TFH! Glad you got anything useful out of my little speech. I guess i was hoping things would move along instead of be stuck in the same scene all week… i should know better! Well, this is a nice enough note to go out on, for once. Still can’t figure out the timing of all this (trying to get the set for Christmas maybe?) but for a holiday arc it could be worse. And maybe this week’s dismal Judge Parker and Luann also took some of the heat off.
I did come across the website for this store in SF which had a few pictures of the store and staff at last year’s Free Comic Book day. They make quite a contrast to the KK! If i ever get out to Ohio i may swing by one of Batiuk’s favorite stores to see if they’re “old style” (dark and off-putting) or “new” (bright and friendly).
