Owen-One

Hello Snarks! SoFsDavidO here, takin’ over for a very competent TFHackett as we get up-to-date with Westview’s senior student, Owen Muffinhead in today’s strip.

*sniff* *sniff*– do you smell that? The scent of convoluted, forced shenanigans coming up? We’ve got a whole week of it folks, as it looks like Owen is going to be the Scapegoats mascot in this week’s Very Contrived Plotline!

  1. Bill has been in this strip a lot lately. It’s only going to get worse, I’m sure. Batiuk is probably writing very heartfelt and sensitive strips about incompetent football players abusing their girlfriends as we type.

  2. After Sunday’s strip, I was so excited about the upcoming week of MacBeth/Game of Thrones episodes. Oh well, i suppose football mascot jokes can suck just as much.

  3. Bull looks like an enormous fat baby in that second panel. Batiuk really has issues trying to keep character continuity in the way he depicts these losers. And he gets shorter every year.

  4. Ah, the old “put a character in a funny costume for easy laughs” trope, an oldie and a…uh…oldie. If I know my tropes, Owen’s donning of the mascot costume will either result in some sort of grand redemption or some kind of terrible humiliation. One thing is certain: Owen having to wear the costume means that at least one thing will happen this week, which is one more than the average. This arc is already downright ambitious by FW standards.

  5. I would tend to go for humiliation. Batiuk likes humiliating young people because his grandkids never seem to want to listen to his blathering on about the Four Dead in O-HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-O!! or about how they need to get their prostates checked yesterday.

  6. I thought Owen was like 1st chair trumpet in the Marching Band. Note to Tom: Most HS Bands play music from the stands during the games….kinda hard to take out a trumpet player to be a mascot.
Yet another continuity failure…..besides being a 5th year Senior.
Meanwhile KSU is back in full session…..remember when we thought FW was going to be all about Sum-More?

  7. Is Owen supposed to be wearing a Fantastic 4 shirt or is he wearing something from JC Penney’s mis-colored billiard ball collection?

Batiuk is probably writing very heartfelt and sensitive strips about incompetent football players abusing their girlfriends as we type.

Though I don’t recall the strips specifically, TB apparently already trod here back in Act II with Susan and Scapegoat quarterback Matt Miller (the Wedgeman to Darin and Pete’s Owen and Cody).

  8. The nun and the hooker can’t travel together, because the nun would drown the hooker in holy water. The lawyer and the hooker can’t travel together because they’d corrupt your youthful morals. And the chimp and the parrot can’t travel together because—um—pirates.

Your car gets 23 miles per gallon. How many gallons of gasoline will it take to transport all 5 of them to Seattle?

  9. I remember the younger Winkerbean – before he became a solider and comic book collector and all around good kid was forced to wear some sort of degrading costume as well yes?
Have to note the leer is Bull’s expression is very disturbing .

  10. Wait, Bull…your missing an opportunity!!! Have Cody be ball boy and then watch him throw a 100 yards away. You could have your next star QB for the season!!!
