Boy I sure hope Davis got the permission of the Swanston Community Center and the Mission Oaks Recreation and Parks District before stealing the photo from their Ping Pong Club.

Harvest should be wrapping up this week on the farm. Many MANY MAAAAAANY thanks to Banana Jr 6K for taking over posting duties for much of the last couple months. Please, everyone, praise him with MUCH PRAISE!
Wow! Somebody call Shylock Fox to see how many differences he can spot!
The most dangerous thing about Dangerous Dan Davis is the possibility of a lawsuit, or at least bad publicity, when he swipes from the wrong person or entity.
Tom Batiuk constantly uses comic book characters, other comic strip characters, and real people in his strips. All in ways that are not covered by fair use. If he hasn’t been sued by now, I doubt he ever will be.
If I didn’t know better, I’d swear Batiuk was judgment proof. (Meaning, so broke that no one would bother suing him.)
This is why Mike Patterson didn’t get sued for the hit piece he did on his downstairs neighbors: he had no money.
Not even a tip of the Funky felt-tip. What a jerk. Makes me glad the Riders won the Grey Cup last night…..in Winnipeg! Serves the Bombers right for indulging Puff Tommy.
11/17: Another whining about being old and decrepit strip.
Another whining about being old and decrepit strip, when both these men are well into their 100s. Keeping them alive seems like a cruel joke at this point, but they’re still well enough to stand and play On-Table Pickleball.
I wonder if that’s why every Christmas with Ralph, I expect him to kill himself so he could be with his wife and child. Our heroic author tends to view my fear of this asan act of bullying…..which kind of answers some questions.
Timmy Meckler’s death was another bit of cheap drama that Batiuk never actually resolved.
In fact, I’m not 100% sure Ralph even knows that his now-dead son saved Crankshaft’s daughter Pam from the horrors of the Kent State shooting. That might been a huge relief to someone who’s not coping with the early death of their child. But the truth remains hidden, because Ed still insists the shooters were in the right, and will tolerate no othert viewpoint. And Pam doesn’t dare speak out about what really happened, for fear of offending him.
It would be a great story if Ralph Meckler DID kill himself, because that would force Ed and Pam to take a serious look what they could have done to stop it. But that won’t happen in a universe where will nobody dares even suggest that Les Moore needs to take a closer look at his entire role in Lisa’s death.
I wrote a big info dump on that story here: https://sonofstuckfunky.com/2024/05/14/the-story-about-may-4-was-the-best-funkyverse-arc-in-25-years-heres-why-its-awful-anyway/
1) Crankshaft believes in the super crazy no-way domino theory that had no bearing on reality.
2) Crankshaft thus had no idea of how pointless it all was. Lose to Hitler and he’ll bomb Manhattan, violate your wife and turn your kids into lab animals. Lose to Ho Chi Minh and LBJ looks like Foghorn Leghorn.
3) The idealism he says he has and that Batiuk believes in is as real as the myth of the clean Wehrmacht. They signed up because they played Big Boy Follow The Leader. They signed up to visit desolation on Japan and Germany. They signed up to impress dames. They signed up to avoid what Ed dishes out to protestors. Their coping strategy was to convince themselves that Capra Corn drove them.
When you’re as old as Crankshaft is (about 82 in 2001), you don’t care about details like that. Crankshaft believes what he believes, even if he doesn’t know why anymore. He’s right, he know’s he’s right, everyone else is wrong, and that’s that.
And I really like your suggestion that Ralph Meckler seems suicidal. He clearly has unresolved issues from the death of his son many years ago. And I’m sure Crankshaft didn’t help when he found that old video of Not-Dead-Yet Timmy lying around. The perfect Funkyverse Christmas gift: something new to torture yourself with.
Westview must have some SCP Foundation-level factory that manufactures video tapes of dead loved ones by the truckload.
There is a sort of defeatist tendency in deferring to the senile. Ed can’t even question why he sees children as being spoiled. No way does he have it in him to understand what was going on back then.
As for Batiuk himself, questioning his dad means not being grateful to be alive. This is what drives this Greatest Generation thing
Much praise! Much praise! Much praise!
ComicBookHarriet and Banana Junior 6000 work together like hand in glove!
It’s amazing what the 2 of you can blog with so little help from the muse in Ohio.
Congratulations on harvest ending! That also is much praise!
What would we all do without BJ6K and Davis’ art swipes?
I can’t speak for everyone, but knowing myself, something less productive.
I shall bestow upon thee the highest praise known to man: WE STAND IN LINE!
Today’s Crankshaft
Not sure if this week’s gonna be Random Joke Week or not
Great find! I love how you can find these. By the way, can we confirm that this is the “Dorian Greyhound” from a few weeks ago? people.com/pets/what-you-need-to-know-about-owning-a-greyhound/
Sure looks like it!
11/18: Day Two of Old People Whining About Being Old.
11/18 is the 40th anniversary of the launch of Calvin and Hobbes. NPR did a feature on it, which in my opinion underestimated the greatness of this strip. Still worth checking out though.

(sound of crickets)
11/19: Close but no cigar, Muddled Aphorism Guy.
Is Tom Batiuk writing for Rex Morgan MD now? Because this shitshow of “look at me, I wrote a book, watch me get huge cash advances even though my work is sub-NaNoWriMo amateur crap that exploits the lives of real people” is exactly what the Funkyverse gives us constantly.
11/19: Crankshaft needs a flu shot because your “autumn immune system” doesn’t work as well when you’re old! HAHAHAHA!
Only you don’t want your “autoimmune system” to work at all, because that means your immune system is mistakenly attacking your own body.
Fun fact: While it’s true that the immune system generally becomes less effective with age, autoimmune diseases often get worse!
HAHAHAHA! Flu shot! “Autumn immune”! OH HO HO HO!
The clunky and poorly thought out punchline is all. He’s turning into Lynn Johnston on us.
November is exactly when your autumn immune system SHOULD be working. Or maybe it is working, since my area has been resistant to autumn temperatures this year. Thank you, Crankshaft, for keeping the autumn away! Can he also get a Winter Immune System installed? Or would that be climate damage?

This week is just uninteresting for me because I’m still waiting for the MinMope wedding
I guess it says a lot if this is so dull that it’s making someone pine for another superhero themed Montoni’s wedding.
