A non-turn of events!

A single phone call reveals what a most snarkers and my long-dead grandmother suspected; Summer will be going to Kent State. With most folks a lot more wary of the value of a college education I’m not sure Les should be making his smirk/smug satisfaction face.

In a development that should surprise no one, Summer II got invited to Kent State as well, causing Cayla to break out into her best hatchet-face.

Comin' up, one side of spatula smack!

Guest blogger DavidO here, filling in as best I can for the very funny TFHackett!

Les looks like he’s just about to set some ground rules with a spatual upside of Cayla’s head, if his tiny flippered arm will let him reach that far. Meanwhile, Keisha’s transformation into a classic Westview Turtle person is almost complete. And, of course, no gathering would be complete without at least mentioning Montoni’s greasy pizza.

…The big “surprise” will be, as always, staggeringly lame and instantly forgettable…

Shocker, huh? Elevating the two gay teens to prom royalty would have required drawing them again and maybe even giving them names or another line or two of dialogue. So much safer to have the kids bestow the honor on Mr. Nate and Mrs. No First Name Green.

…this guy [Batiuk] can’t draw “walking,” can he?

He’s not the best at depicting people expressing excitement, either (remember “bespectacled blue shirt khaki guy” at the basketball playdowns?). Summer and Keisha show proper decorum (probably relieved that they weren’t elected as the royal couple). But some of the Westview teens exert themselves so hard to demonstrate their approval as to risk injury. Maddie (wearing that #*@%in’ hat) shimmies awkwardly and offers a cracked grin. Cory may be a delinquent but he’s no homophobe; he thrusts up a thumb and smiles with his bottom teeth. Rana actually seems to be having a hearty laugh at the Greens’ expense for some reason, while Big Mac is just all like durr-hurr-hurr. But I think it’s Touchdown Guy in the blue tux who best expresses the joy that all of us are feeling…this arc is finally concluded.

Phew! Gay prom wore me out! I’ve asked David O to
step in and take over the reins for a week…enjoy!

Is that f*cking Les standing there behind Nate in panel two?

I believe that’s both Les and Cayla standing off to the side behind Nate. How fun!

Yep, Lord and Lady Douchebag have a place of honor behind Nate, and Summer beams her approval as he wraps up his sermon. If “the long and short of it” is that the SSC is allowed to attend in accordance with the school’s rules, why the hell didn’t Nate just tell Roberta that when she blew into his office? Oh, right: this is a month-long prestige arc.

I Suppose You're Wondering Why I've Called You All Here Today

Their walkout averted, the Westview kids trudge to the gym to listen to What Mr. Green Is Going To Say. It’s heartening to see that Cody and Owen are already completely over their mutual crush on Summer: she’s walking about ten paces ahead of them and they’re not even looking her way.
