Say Cheese

Taking the senior class photo has changed? Because it’s being taken with a cellphone? Wow, progress, huh? Something else that’s changed is TB’s draftsmanship, if indeed it is he who drew this. I have no idea who the old gent taking the picture is, but I guess he’s another throwaway teacher, or maybe a passerby who the class asked if he would oblige. But this whole strip looks like it took ten minutes to draw. We recognize Maddie by her hat and red hair, and Cory by his shifty demeanor. But is that supposed to be the Capitol dome in the background? Might as well be Podunk City Hall.

Flashback to the 2007 Washington trip…Chien is still a drip…

Rewind

For cryin’ out loud, Summer. Can’t you let the guy watch his videotape in peace without you sitting there simpering?

Lisa must have been having a “good” day when she recorded her video message, since by the time she learned that Darin was her son, she was about two months from death. She looks pretty robust on the tape. I wonder how proud she’d be if she lived to see how far Darin got in life with that MBA.

A tip o’ the SoSF leopardskin pillbox hat to the estimable DavidOrth
for once again taking over the blogging reins this past week!

Quality time spent with Dad sure isn’t what it used to be. These days poor Dad’s presence is barely acknowledged by his self-absorbed, distractable child. What’s changed? Why, it’s because of those newfangled “cell phones”! This strip’s anti-technology drumbeat is starting to give me a migraine. Are there any 21st century contrivances that aren’t making life in Westview worse instead of better?

I Am the Man in the Box

Where I come from, we print things out. “Printed it off” sounded weird to me (like “playdowns” instead of “playoffs”). But a Google search turned up this forum thread, so we’ll allow it. Today’s strip continues to beat the same dead horse, but anyone reading it outside the context of the rest of the week’s strips would have no idea what the joke was.

Your humble scribe feels the need for a mental health week; for the next seven days, guest blogger davidorth will serve as your guide to the Westviewniverse!

To Each His *yawn*

The odd perspective in panel one of today’s strip is no doubt meant to draw attention to the cup filled with pens and pencils atop Tony’s quaint and homey roll-top desk.  It is one of these writing implements (and not a flip phone as I first thought) that Tony wields, and I hoped that he was sneaking up on “Boy Lisa” to “stab him in the eye” as suggested by Epicus Doomus. It’s been interesting to follow the comments here this week: it’s an unscientific sampling, to be sure, but the bottom line is that, paper-based or digital (or both), you’re going to use what you’re comfortable with.
