Everyone say hi to Alex, Westview’s only comix fangirl (since Chien vanished) and mopey Pete’s biggest admirer, in her first strip appearance in over five years. Owen and his usual sidekick Cody are apparently on the outs since that yearbook photo remark, and anyway, what does Cody know about gurlz? The Chullo’d One, like Pete, just cannot understand why women don’t find him appealing. Alex responds to Owen’s plight not with empathy but with teasing. Poor Owen is a geek even among geeks.

Thankfully, I don’t remember Alex from her first appearance. Why would a 40 year old goth be into playing video games with teenage boys? Why would a comics shop have a gaming system on the premises? Every teen boy in the US of A has a system in his home at this point, and plays on line with his buddies.
The worst thing about this one is that he didn’t use it to wrap up and blow off the LOTL arc which means it looks like it’ll trudge onward for another week, unless he just forgets about it entirely as he tends to do sometimes.
Alex: a FW cast member so obscure, so infrequently-seen and so forgotten that I have absolutely no recollection of her at all in any context. I am assuming she represents WHS’ “goth/punk/emo/”troubled” contingency and was probably created to fill out some long-since forgotten “prestige arc” about, oh I don’t know, maybe fingernail-biting or something. Anyone aware of how or if she relates to any other FW cast members?
Isn’t she 40′ something?
Trolling for young boys like DSH John
I tend to be irritated by the fact that female geeks are, as far as popular media is concerned, a non-existent species. Then I see a character like Alex, and I realize that maybe that’s not a bad thing.
I have no idea who this “Alex”creature is. I barely recall the linked Pete strip. Were there other appearances before that? Because the only other appearance I remember is the model sheet. And speaking of 40 year olds, video games and teenage boys, I take it we don’t see John anywhere in the shop because he’s assisting one of his shoppers behind closed doors somewhere in his above-ground labyrinth?
What had Buck got that Cody doesn’t have?
Buck is a mammal.
we’re a quarter year in bathack ,wheres all this amazing stuff u promised on your blog ?? this is worst then last yr if that’s possible
Owen, I believe the correct term is “Bully Jock”.
Is playing video games in the Creepy Blue Twilight Ody/Cowen’s (still can’t keep their names straight) idea of foreplay?
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here’s a quote from Samuel Beckett explaining why we all keep reading this strip: “Nothing is funnier than unhappiness.”
In thinking about Mopey Pete and his troubles, I was thinking how much more sense it would be if somehow HE was the one that lost the job and had to work at Kreepy Korner. He knows something about or two about comic books, and mildly less creepy than Beardo.
So Goatee Boy and Dinkle AND Mopey Pete have book signings for adoring fans? Waiting for Funky’s first book tour. Jesus.
BatHack’s Secret Formula for creating characters: Slap a hat or weird hair on them, and INSTANT QUIRKY CHARACTER! Bam!
Swishy Tom up in mom’s attic: “Multicolor hair – check! Leather- check! Metal studs – check! Strange makeup – check! Piercings – check! Fishnet gloves – check! I made a quirky character. Ayrhead thought she was a fat Wonder Woman.”
Batiuk botches the lead-in. Owen asks Alex if he can ask her a personal question, and then proceeds to ask her a question that has absolutely nothing to do with Alex whatsoever.
I am assuming she represents WHS’ “goth/punk/emo/”troubled” contingency
You’re wrong, ED! She was only created to have a weirdo who chafed Pete’s ass at one of his comic book signings. She only happened to do this so early on in Act III that she got her own character sheet. A couple months later and she would have been a totally non-descript like pretty much everybody else. She’s apparently been brought back both because people were wondering about that weird woman in the model sheets AND this is one of the few times Batiuk was aware enough to realize that if Owen were asking this question of Cody, Gross John or Crazy, it’d be too weird to be anything other than a lead-in to Owen’s first homosexual experience.
Plus, Owen, if you want to attract a woman who’s into jocks, you may want to clean your slob self up. It’d probably not enough on its own, but it’s an essential start. (Who are we kidding, this is the start of an arc where Owen wins over Mallory, just as Funky won over Cindy, and Batiuk is so divorced from reality that he thinks this would be heartwarming)
Alex look disturbing like a cross between Shelly Winters and Rogue of the X-Men.
And a goth girl in Westview? Talk about gilding the lily.
This chick would be a perfect complement to Comic Book John. Creepy, fat, skunk hair, and probably into the depraved types of sex that both of them would be into.
Charles: Thanks for the background on “Alex”, I honestly had no idea who or what she’s supposed to be. Now if only someone could explain why I (or anyone else) is supposed to care…
Is there ANYONE in Westview who HASN’T done a “book signing” at some point in time? BatTom needs to have one of these dimwits write a comic book about pizza and do a signing for it, then things will truly have come full-circle in the Funkyverse.
Okay, now i don’t know what to expect. Alex was one of the model sheets on the table in the video of Batiuk working on the March 3rd strip (see the comments), along with Frankie and Summer. So, possibility of upcoming appearance by the other two is–increasing?
And now! Let’s play Funky Who Would Ya Do!
Alex or Summer?
Go!
Batyecch aims for “Quirky Individualist,” but hits “What The Fuck Is THAT???!!!”
Any fans of Married with Children remember the episode where the Bundy’s go to England to the town of Lower Uncton? A Bundy insulted a witch and brought down a curse that made the town dark. I wonder what ancestor Funky insulted a witch causing a curse to be placed on Westview?
What does Buck Peterson have that you don’t, Cody? Well for starters he’s got an awesome porn star name!
I like to imagine Chien currently is a prematurely grey, perpetually scowling, emotionally troubled manager at the Westview Mall’s one (and only) espresso-flavored gelato stand.
She hardly ever speaks to anyone from the old days, but should she manage to spy one at the mall, she murmurs a heart-felt “UNNNNNGH” under her breath, then swiftly heads for the back room to hide.
@John: At first I thought that was Chen as well. Given how the women in Westview don’t age well.
Given how the women in Westview don’t age well. If you were married to DSH John, Funky, Crazy Harry or (shudder) Les, you’d be aging rapidly as well. The booze and the pills and the comfort food required to ease the pain will age a girl.
Given how Batboy likes to pay homage to real life friends and acquaintances, could it be that Alex is supposed to be his mom?
