Ah…now I get it. Up til now, this Funky Winkerbean arc has been easily the most baffling of them all. With today’s episode, it all fits into place.
Pa Winkerbean wants to commit suicide, and he figures he might as well have fun doing so.
Funky Winkerbean, you somehow manage never to disappoint, in your own disappointing way.
I guess the same advice would apply to Funky giving handies to hobos in the alley next to Montoni’s. Thank, pa.
The truly amazing thing is that, despite living in Westview, he didn’t develop this attitude in his twenties.
“Yeah, I also never part of a violent street gang, neither. So I’ve put on this bad-ass jacket in hopes of making initiation. Damn problem is that there no effing greasers anymore. I’m fifty years too-late. Oh, well. Hey Son, can you figure out how to get me into MS-13?
Wow, Mr. Winkerbean seems awfully lucid today. There’s only one conclusion to be reached here: smoking cures dementia! On the plus side, there’s the increased lucidity and awareness. On the minus side, he still recognizes Funky. But hey, it isn’t like he visits very often, right?
But anyhow, it’s tough to argue with Pa Bean’s logic today. It’s also tough to think of much else to say about this one. One of the more bizarre FW arcs in recent memory if you ask me.
I hate that I know this, but wasn’t this exact same joke used in FW’s sister strip?
Yup.
Great catch Slager. I’m so glad I never started reading Crankshaft, you know?
Pa Winkerbean, the new starting quarterback for YOUR Westview High School Scapegoat football team!
I would say its not half bad, even if totally predictable, but gee I read Slager’s post and see that is a retread. I thought only Blondie and Family Circus did that.
He Batuick if you’re doing re-runs bring back Les’s machine gun and the Star Trek computer.
This is definitely showing up as the Comic Curmudgeon’s most depressing FW strip of the month. A man actually outright saying he’s going to pollute his body with whatever he wants, because he’s going to die soon anyway.
And now we know Pa Winkerbean’s only goal in life: to start smoking. Never mind that virtually no one starts smoking after the age of 20 and that Pa is a dementia patient in an old folks’ home. Funky Winkerbean is a reality-based comic strip that depicts contemporary issues affecting young adults in a thought-provoking and sensitive manner.
And—deities help me!—I’ve been tempted to start a Crankshaft snark blog.
