Really…boring

Les’s ability to quote random Wikipedia articles doesn’t quite pass Mason’s bullshit meter in today’s strip. Les is trying to help, but it’s going to take more than unnatural hand gestures and stories so boring that they made Mason’s skull elongate to get Mason over his anxiety about reading out-loud in a small private room to a handful of folks he already knows.

  1. I remember reading that whenever famed cartoonist Tom Batiuk would find himself suffering from “cartoonist’s block”, he’d hit himself in the head with an oversized cartoon rubber mallet. Then, in his concussed state, he’d just write down whatever nonsensical gibberish popped into his head first. In fact it’s rumored to have been the way “Lisa’s Story” got started, not to mention countless other “classic” arcs now lost to the shifting sands of history.

Smug Les…Insecure Les…allow me to introduce you to Learned Les, the “cultured” dick with ears. He’s just as annoying as the rest of them, too. Mr. F*cking Know-It-All, boring everyone with his knowledge. What a dick.

  2. Today’s strip seems to feature facial expressions never before seen on Les. It’s almost as if he is relaying useful information, until you read the words in the balloons.

  3. Problem with this is that, well, the situation doesn’t have any actual pressure or any stakes that transform a regular situation into an intense one.

  4. I like to think Les’ dialogue is broken up into three panels because he would pause for a few minutes after each one, waiting to be basked in praise, while his listeners quickly busied themselves with other pursuits. After thinking to himself how little appreciated he was, Les then went on to the next panel’s dialogue.

  5. It’s pretty bad when you’re in a position to receive advice from Les Moore, except maybe if that advice is “if a loved one dies, milk it for all it’s worth and never ever dream of moving on”. Still better than worrying he thinks your winkerbean is funky, though.

  6. The odd thing is that Batiuk thinks that Les is trying to reach out to Mason. Since he’s as otherworldly as his avatar, he doesn’t realize that Les looks like a crazy man.

  7. I’ve heard that when someone wants to appear intellectual and cultured, they start spouting pointless anecdotes about famous opera singers.

  8. I inferred from Les’ anecdote that the sets, missing their hinge nail, would subsequently collapse around Pavarotti during the opera… an entertaining visual that makes this the funniest FW strip in many months.

  9. Is Mason Jarr half-horse or something? Seriously that is one long ass neck he has!! Forgot casting him as Les Moore, tab this guy for the Mr. Ed dark gritty reboot!

  10. Dull and pointless. Except for one thing. I now want to go listen to some recordings of Pavarotti – so it isn’t all bad.
oh yes per the internet the bent nail thing is a traditional good luck charm for Italian singers, not just Luciano.

Many unpaid interns died (of boredom) to bring us this information.

  12. A little off topic – but when I go to see the strip, funkyfan is really, really irritating. I come here for the snark on funky, or over to CC for a bit of snark – but I do not think snarking on FW comes close to what a complete asshole funkyfan is. Paragraphs of condescending bullshit. TB has sent C&D to SOSF, can we somehow get funkyfan thrown the hell off the web? (oh and creepy Nelson Puppet can go with him. Brrrrrrrr. that guy seems to comes off as a greasy sleazeball in some of the things posted.)

  13. FunkyFan just seems sad to me. It’s like someone said–

“Wow, Discuss is being really draggy in posting my comments. Anyway, ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ is the greatest movie ever made–the wit is superb, the characters are so finely drawn, and it’s obvious that all that research has paid off handsomely. The ideas are so compelling and true to life, the characters are engaging and real, and I can’t wait to see how Shia LaBoef tops this! Kudos to Michael Bay, and thanks to MBayFan, ILoveXPlosions, BayRules, RobotWreckage and BlowItAllUp for being supporting fans! And boo to the bullies/trolls who think that this franchise is already tired in its second entry. And I am totally real and have been following Transformers since 75, and I’m not going away.”

I’ve seen “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and if someone said something like the above to me, I’d kind of smile a bit and walk away. There isn’t any way that someone of that opinion is open to any kind of discussion.

Honestly, it’s more sad than pathetic. Hey, did I just write a new slogan for Funky Winkerbean?
