Le Mort D’AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

In today’s strip, Funky terrifies his old man at the knee-slappingly named rest home, Bedside Manor.

Heigh-ho. We know how you feel, Mort. We know how you feel. Still, it could have been worse.

Funky: Les is here. Mort: AHHHHHHHHHH!!!

  1. An old man in a nursing home experiences sheer terror thanks to his son. Who on earth would think that’s funny?

  2. Mort’s “AHHHHHHHHHH!!!” reaction is probably the funniest thing that Batom® has drawn in recent years. And that’s not saying much.

  3. I guess because Buddy isn’t around much anymore, Pa Bean has become my “favorite” FW character by default. At least he has human emotions, as I’d scream if I woke up with Funky in my face too. That’s more than I can say about the rest of these assorted annoying weirdos.

  4. Ha! This is the best Funky strip since….1990 or something! Good pacing, a funny picture, something of a punchline, real English, nothing that requires translation. Has Batom finally hired himself some editors?

On a snarky note, that “AAAAHHHHHH!!!” panel should be used in every strip. It fits!

  5. I’d react like that too if I looked back on my life and found that my only accomplishment was siring Funky.

  6. Meanwhile, the show runners for the Simpsons are probably pissed that Batiuk stole their “Let’s decry how awful the way we treat old people is” thing and turned it into a “Let’s mock old people for being useless” thing.

  7. So I guess the old man is wheelchair-bound until he’s not? Is Bedside Manor just a senior living facility, or an assisted living facility, or a convalescent home? Batiuk seems to depict Mort in various stages of need to fit whatever maudlin scene he’s thought of that day. Being left unattended in an easy chair when he’s incapable of walking under his own power is highly unlikely. Setting aside that, I don’t know why startling someone awake is funny, rather than just another routine daily occurrence.

  8. The strip itself is pretty much a throwaway – so what else is new, right? – but that head shot of “The Funk Man” in the masthead is disconcerting. It looks like Funky is pretending to be a haughty actor who portrays Funky for the amusement of the masses. “Aren’t you just simply entraptured at today’s portrayal of Funkmeister Winkydink? It is one of my better performances.” He’s a regular Mason Jarr..

  9. Methinks Mort was hoping for Masky McDeath to poke him on the shoulder, which would explain his disappointment in the last panel.

  10. @Rusty – many “assisted living” facilities have all three levels…some folks are more or less independent, others require constant medical supervision, and so on. It wouldn’t surprise me if Bedside Manor was a multi-building complex. After all, most of Westview is old, sick, dead or Les.

  11. beckoning: Yep, but I’m pretty certain Batiuk has shown Mort here consistently in a wheelchair and in the early stages of Alzheimers/dementia. He was at Funky’s house for xmas in a wheelchair.

  12. Funky Sr is now in my dead pool for 2015: I predict before the snow melts in March in Ahia that we have one Sunday strip almost identical to today’s where Funky Sr. doesn’t wake up but then he does and Funky says “Gee dad don’t scare me” . Shortly there another strip where the old man is dead and doesn’t wake up. Or TB may stretch it out over several weeks like Darwood going to get his mail that time. And later Harry, Les and Funky talk about Funky’s father who is know dead and how Funky used to do stuff with him before he died. .

I have a pretty clear memory of early ACT I did we ever see Funky’s dad (or mom) or anyone’s mom or dad? The only adults were the teachers.
