Bull Likes It Rough

In today’s action-packed segment, we see Bull fly off the handle after a bad call. The Scapegoats are probably like 3rd and 50, it’s no wonder Coach is so tense.

roughing-1Also this guy. What the hell is going on with his shoulder? Is his arm growing out of the side of his neck or something? And aren’t penalty flags yellow? Maybe the ref is surrendering so Bull will back off.

  1. Given that this isn’t the first time Bull’s freaked out like this, and given that he’s usually drawn with the physique of Mr. Potato Head, how has his heart not exploded yet?

  2. Coming tomorrow: having seen enough, Les and Linda rush Bull to the ER where the attending physician immediately orders a full scrapbookectomy and 25 milligrams of intravenous wry cynicism. Bull slips into a coma and no one notices.

  3. The real tell that Bull is suffering from CTE isn’t him going Bob Knight on a referee who is probably as competent on the job as everyone else in Westview (that is, not at all). No, the real tell is that he’s coaching football with a security badge still clipped to his chinos.

  4. With his ongoing and apparently increasing meth habit, Bull’s weight problem will take care of itself.

  5. Where is the whistle? That is not the right termterminology. The whistle stops play has nothing to do with a penalty call. Why is the ref throwing his hanky on the field. Bathack shows that he has no undetanding of yet another topic.

  6. Sweet… Back in the summer I predicted (and was hoping for) a good old-fashioned Woody Hayes-style meltdown… Nevermind the fact that folks who have fond memories of Woody Hayes is right in the sweet spot of Batiuk’s target reader demographic…

  7. I forgot to mention that Ed Crankshaft in appearance and temperament could easily be based on Hayes, so Batiuk isn’t new to this…

  8. I noticed that the refs flag is a white color rather than yellow. I would like to say that this symbolism of the referee throwing the white flag of surrender. for the referee, but that would be giving Batiuk too much credit.

  9. Crankshaft

Ladies & Gentleman we are actually having a plotline around the “hero” of our strip trying to talk a dead leaf into falling…………… That’s a thing I just wrote.

  10. This is not just a stupid temper tantrum that makes the ref think “I don’t even NEED this job anymore”; it’s a stupid tantrum that makes Les feel superior to Bull.

  11. As noted elsewhere the proper phrase is where’s the flag. Still I hope that the story arc ends with Bull savagely beating Les while the townsfolk watch on smiles on their faces and joy in their hearts. Some one says to Funky “shouldn’t we stop this?” and Funky says “we’ve been waiting for this for years, give a few more minutes.”

  12. BanTom’s time frames are so skewed you never really know when anything is happening. Is Bull’s latest rampage taking place right where the story left off or in “real time”, which means everyone sat around doing nothing for weeks on end as he deteriorated? This novel approach to medical care probably explains the whole Lisa thing quite nicely.
