Credit Where It’s Dull

…[S]houldn’t “Ms. Lopez” be “Mrs. Bushka”? Did Bull die off-camera or something?

Here’s another unanswered question: is Jim being witty or does he just not know what a credit union is? Another question, and this one’s for any teachers out there: are you required to pack up and schlep home all your belongings at the end of every school year? Linda’s got but one box but it looks to be loaded with books; Jim’s got two boxes but still manages to get a hand free to push open the automatic door. Burchett gets to introduce another new character: that janitor who vowed to one day kick the ass of the guy whoever the hell peed in his closet 40 years ago.

I legit don’t understand this. This IS the same Linda that’s married to Bull, right? Not that she couldn’t keep her name or anything, but combined with the slightly different rendering it’s something that might give a (lol) newer reader reason to think that “Ms. Lopez” is a heretofore unseen WHS character. Hypothetically, that is.

“He he. You know what’d REALLY be funny?”

He does that way, way too much. Making amusing comical observations based on really mundane things is fine…IF the observations (and/or the wordplay based upon them) are amusing and comical. FW’s never are.

When I first read this, I thought for sure it was supposed to be ironic. These two teachers are bitching about not getting enough credit while walking right over the floor the janitor just cleaned, without even acknowledging him. Despite the fact that they’ve probably been working in the same building as him for years, and they’re not going to see him again until fall.
But I’m sure that’s probably giving Batiuk, way, way too much credit.

  3. Once again, TB p!ssed away another week without resolving any of the 4242 outstanding storylines–by outstanding I mean unfinished, not excellent.

This might have been a decently entertaining strip, except that NO teacher at Westview High deserves credit. They are either whiners, mean, condescending, hypocritical, or stupid.

By week’s end, the only thing that would’ve saved these strips is if the whole faculty had been fired today, not just Les.

Looks to me like the janitor is the only person employed at Westview High who is competent at their job.

If you cover up the text in panel 1 it looks like Linda and Kablichnick have cleaned out their desks after getting fired. It is a definite improvement.

  5. Leaving aside the fact that Mr Science is too busy feeling sorry for himself because parents call him a condescending dickhead who sucks at his job to know what a credit union is, the fact that he cannot see the custodian or admit that he needs credit says a lot about why the faculty should be hacked to bits and sold to Asians as an aphrodisiac.

    Teachers love to complain.

I didn’t think that the administrative staff had to pack up their stuff for the summer. I thought they stayed on for a couple weeks to wrap things up.

  7. @dougputhoff:
The problem is that being mean, condescending, whining, hypocritical and stupid is the only kind of teaching Batiuk knew how to do. It’s like watching failed English teacher Greg Evans make a ‘hero’ out of dimwitted stuffed short Mr Fogarty.

The only WHS teacher who wasn’t a morose sad-sack was Art Teacher and no one’s seen that guy in years. “Everything is terrible and the students are morons…might as well make a stupid joke about it and weakly smirk”…FW in a nutshell.

I know they’re a little backwards in Westview, but I had no idea how cut off from the rest of Ohio they must be. Googling “ohio teacher credit union” brought up half a dozen on the first page.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that the good folks of Ohio have decided for their own protection to shun all things Westview. Of course the people of Westview have yet to figure this out.
