Hello Darling

Programming note: Monday’s strip won’t drop until midnight eastern, so expect another “placeholder” post. Thanks!

Now this strip from last March (see detail) makes sense: the “we” moving back to Ohio is not Darin and Jess, but Darin and Pete. Turns out Boy Lisa was right, too. Jessica seems to have adjusted very well to being a long distance wife and mother.  Shouldn’t she be “trying to sublet the apartment and wrap[ping] up her documentary film work with Cindy”? Instead, she’s lounging on the deck enjoying her fifth Ketel and tonic. She’s so sloshed that she accidentally texts her mother, who is grateful for this misdirected crumb of affection.

Readers of the official FW blog will recognize the bespectacled geek dad in panel one as John Darling, Jessica’s father who was murdered. Unless they read today’s “dialogue,” though, they’ll have a hard time figuring out that the woman who looks exactly like Jessica but with different hair is her mom Jan. As drawn by Tom Armstrong, Jan Murdock was quite the hottie. Batiuk (and the returning Rick Burchett) render her using the Blandly Attractive White Female Template.

It’s weird Jessica calls her twin sister “mom”.

Kind of late for a Mother’s day strip.

  3. The Nelson Puppet

    Lame attempt at pathos.

  4. Rusty

The plastic surgeon is the most competent character in this strip.

Jan Murdoch Darling, one of the saddest characters in the Batiukverse and TB barely touches on her. Grew up with idiot brother Jeff and terrible and verbally and emotionally abusive mother Rose. Saw her husband murdered right in front of her eyes. And now her only daughter never even texts, much less calls or visits.

Seems like TB’s wheelhouse, but this is about all we ever get.

billy, I think Plantman did Jan a solid favor when he offed John Darling. And he would have gotten away with it if not for that nosey Les…

I think there’s a budding Dorian Gray picture industry in Westview. It might unseat Montoni’s as the economic driver.

  7. It’s easier for him to kick the sportos and popular kids in the groin than to face the Hell he’s visited on Jan what with him being a filthy sadist with mommy issues and all.

  8. So is it time to get ready for more to the My-Father-John-Darling-Who-Was-Murdered saga? More “Barbie”?? More Les and the BOOK???

“Whoops! Sorry, Mom… I didn’t mean to express affection towards you. Hell, I don’t even want to interact with you.”

Yeah, this one seems sort of out of sequence or something. It’s weird how some kinds of continuity matters to him while some doesn’t at all. Boy Lisa and Jessica are married and have been for at least twenty years or thereabouts, it’s totally inexplicable as to why she’d STILL be out there having fun in the warm California sun while her husband and mother-in-law are toiling away in Ohio raising that kid of hers. It’s bizarre. Some continuity seems to matter to him (Jessica still being in CA) yet some doesn’t matter at all (Boy Lisa and Jess as “young kids just starting out”). I don’t get it either, but if they aren’t careful they’ll end up having another Cory on their hands before they know it.

Extra points for quoting “California Sun” by The Rivieras!

The 300th annual St Lisa’s Run, Darin’s exact birthday, band crap, he all gets to the day. Anything dealing with a woman character who is not Lisa goes by the boards.

Like the passive-aggressive tone of “When you’re a parent”. Must have been a lot of “What, no kids yet?” nagging behind that one. No wonder Mommy Dearest is surprised to hear from Jessica-whose-farther-was-John-Darling-who-was-murdered-IN-Cold-Blood!

So Burchett makes the effort to have Jan in the picture frame match her
established look, but doesn’t bother to do that in the other three pictures of her. This makes him a good fit for Batiuk’s half-assed, apathetic approach to the work.

So is the Author saying that Jess doensn’t love her mother? Because it sure looks that way. People as rule if they text a parent “i love you’ by ‘accident’ don’t follow it up with opps “i made a mistake’ But this is FW when the only good mothers are the ones with cookies.

Holy damn that Armstrong version of Jan can get it in all three of her holes all night long!

But seriously, there’s a 60-year-old woman in Westview who’s even hotter than Cindy Sommers and has like 90% less mental and emotional baggage? Why aren’t dudes banging down her door?
