Surly To Bed, Surly To Rise

Link To Today’s Chapter

It’s FW at its darkest and most dramatic today, as an enraged Bull desperately flings his precious football DVDs around in an idiotic frenzy, refusing to return to bed until he’s able to re-live one more old football memory. How this is supposed to differ from non-CTE Bull is beyond me, but there you go. It’s sort of funny how one-dimensional Bull is and how every single aspect of his character, even his psychotic breakdowns, centers around high school football and it’s also mildly amusing how mundane the actual activity (looking for a lost DVD) is, given how this is apparently supposed to portray how “unstable” Bull is supposed to be right now. Maybe tomorrow he’ll violently attack the toilet brush or lash out angrily at that welcome mat that’s always getting stuck under the door.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this week ends in Bull reminiscing about how much better VHS is than DVD, because this is Batiuk and nostalgia is a religion to him.

  2. Nobody can mine the boredom out of any premise like Batiuk. It’s a good thing he doesn’t write comic books, or “Avengers: Endgame” would be the Avengers sitting around in a pizza place talking about looking for comic book issues they thought they’d lost, but it turns out they were–smirks–in another drawer the whole time. And it would last for five hours.

Linda’s starting to look a little like Chief Justice Roger B. Taney!

i always wondered why Batty gives his female characters such bad hair. As today’s Crankshaft shows, he can draw females realistically if he wants to. But why doesn’t he? Cindy is the only one who gets a decent style.

Batiuk isn’t drawing the strip anymore. Chuck Ayers drew this. And Batiuk doesn’t draw CRANKSHAFT, either.

Bull using his x-ray vision there in panel 2, looking through the back of the DVD case…

And this is what she’s quitting teaching for: playing handmaiden to a dyspeptic man-baby throwing a hissy fit because he can’t watch himself snatch another defeat from the jaws of victory.

I’m starting to think the gun violence strips from last week were only setting the stage.

  7. Somebody needs their Xanax dosage increased.

I hope we have not moved from BatHack’s salute (SA-LUTE!) to gun control directly to his salute (SA-LUTE!) to domestic violence.

  9. This is just plain sad. I can’t help but wonder if TB isn’t setting Bull up to commit suicide or have a fatal heart attack (like Mike Webster). I half expect Bull to hit Linda any minute now blaming her for his misplaced media, realize what he’s done and run out of the house into the night with his body being discovered April 1.
