Owenvember continues today: the chullo’d one has been featured in all but four strips so far this month. And yes, folks, Owen is clearly stupid, and/or stoned, but give him a little credit: the woman’s question is pointless (and awkwardly constructed). Why, he’s selling band turkeys to raise money for…the…band.
Ribbed For Her Pleasure
Speaking of St. Lisa, panel 1 seems weirdly evocative of the cover of the first Lisa’s Story book.
I hope you all enjoyed your nearly three-week respite from Les (I know you enjoyed it). Today he’s back, and if you thought his marriage to Cayla meant he’d finally stop talking about his dead first wife, well– oh, you didn’t think he’d stop? Neither has Les stopped thinking that his wry, nonsense-logic brand of observational “humor” is funny to anyone but himself. What has changed is that Cayla, rather than rolling her eyes at Les’ mentions of his late bride, has taken to physically and verbally abusing him each time Lisa’s name comes up. The fact that we see Les in the bathroom taping his ribs before this action takes place suggests that the abuse is ongoing. Notice in the last panel how he’s gone from a smug wiseguy to a pathetic, cringing little milksop.
See Ya Vader
As the last brown leaves flutter over Westview High, while a few green ones inexplicably cling to the tree, the nerds are already at work , improving “our robot” for next year. In the aftermath of Robo-Goat’s slaughter at the hands of Tech’s massive mechanoid, Cody thinks that WHS needs a “more intimidating”, rather than, I dunno, say, a bigger and/or stronger robot.
Métal Hurlant
Ring the bell! Today’s strip is funny. Implausible, sure, but it’s a comic strip (sorry, DSH John). I like how little Robo-Goat is actually screaming in the clutches of Big Walnut Tech’s menacing, mechanical monster. And in panel two, for once, Batiuk makes “tell-don’t-show” actually work, as the boys follow Robo-Goat’s trajectory, presumably through a window or wall. I’d have added a “crash” sound effect in P2, but we shall lay aside the snark hammer for today.
(Today’s post title is kind of a stretch. Did anyone get it?)
Fee Fi Fo Dumb
Yeah, anytime Cody expects things to go his way, count on the opposite outcome. “Robo-Goat” stands ready for battle; unfortunately, arch-rival Big Walnut Tech has brought along the Iron Giant. I kind of like the overhead perspective in today’s strip, but the shadow-within-a-shadow in panel 2 doesn’t work too well.
