Noisy Parker

Link to today’s strip.

Well…uh…say, isn’t it funny how you can go to the hospital, and spend so much time looking for a parking spot that you start singing about it?

No?

Most hospitals have a circular driveway that goes right up to the front door, so that (for example) a person with a leg injury can be helped into a wheelchair. Then, the person driving can go and find a parking spot so that the patient can be tended to.

But if we did that, we wouldn’t get today’s example of ultra-hilarious wit. (I’m guessing that is what we’ve been given.) I’m not sure what Batiuk is aiming for by revisiting this particular story, but I guess he feels he has something to add. I’m anticipating being underwhelmed.

Sugar Baddy

Ew. I’m feeling pretty nauseous now. I didn’t like the multiple times Dinkle made jokes about expecting his wife to put out when he did extremely basic things for her, and I am very much not liking Funky expecting Holly to repay him in sex for picking up her medication. I’m especially disturbed by how shocked and grateful Holly is acting in the third panel. Was she expecting Funky to make her walk from home to pick up the medicine? But what has me disturbed most of all is Funky’s expression. He is loving thinking of himself as his wife’s sugar daddy. Again, ew.

Kiss of Death

I’m not entirely sure why Funky is smirking, since yelling to someone that you hope they break a leg when they’re going into surgery (I’m guessing, Batiuk hasn’t specified) for a broken ankle (again, we don’t know because it hasn’t been specified) seems kind of like a jerk move and not really at all funny. It’s definitely not worth the “aren’t I clever” smirk we’re getting in panel three. Funky sure isn’t acting like someone would if a loved one just suffered a painful injury and is going in to be operated on. Given how the week started with Holly being questioned about if her home is safe, Funky shouldn’t act like he’s having so much fun.
And it is me, or is it kind of odd how we’re almost through an entire week in the hospital and haven’t been told a single thing about Holly’s injury or what the treatment will be? All it would have taken is one world bubble of “We’ll have to perform surgery to repair the torn ligament”, or whatever. But I guess that would’ve taken space that was better used on Funky joking about carrying a purse, or this hospital employee telling Funky to kiss his wife, which is kind of disturbing to me.

Shoeless Funkman

Haha, a man is carrying a purse, isn’t that funny? I’m almost positive that Batiuk has done this gag before, where the entire strip is just “isn’t it funny that a male is carrying a purse?”.  I also find it extremely unlikely that a hospital worker would find it at all remarkable and worth pointing out.  Does she do this every time a woman has treatment and needs someone to hold her purse?
As a comparison to actual humor, just look at Seinfeld. Instead of just having a guy carry a purse, you had Jerry saying it was a “European carryall” and it was actually very funny. With most of his jokes now, Batiuk just takes the first step towards something that could maybe be funny, and then just quits and calls it a day.
Case in point-it would have been a lot better if we could actually see Funky’s shoes in this panel. For all I know, Funky is barefoot, or wearing official Flash shoes.  But then I guess we wouldn’t get to see the close-up of Holly’s terror while Funky is making a wisecrack feet away.
