More of Cody’s assdouchery: he plans to feed his new family by “running a comics shop”. Because that career path worked out so well for Mr. Howard, right? No wonder Mallory is looking daggers at him, while protectively holding her “babies” away from this loser. Cody would pin his family’s future on his ability to acquire and resell the most collectible comic book in history.

The “graded and slabbed” lingo suggests that comics fanboy Batiuk has learned a little bit more about preserving collectible comics since the “Starbuck Jones” arc…you wouldn’t just throw Action Comics #1 in a safe…

I’ve been making a case for Cody-as-modern-day-teenage-Les; but I doubt that Les, at the peak of his nerdiness, would ever come out with anything this douchey. Although, at the risk of offending any readers who are children of hippies: Les did grow up to name his own kid “Summer”.

Forget snooty Mallory Brooks; here’s Cody’s real significant other. Unlike cocky Cody, Owen treats this exercise with due reverence. Yesterday he looked on pensively while waiting his turn at pretend fatherhood. Reaching into the bag, he glances bashfully at “wife” Sara, who, though apparently less than thrilled to be paired with Owen, at least isn’t grossed out by him. Owen seems genuinely saddened by faux Fate’s cruel blow, but best bud and father of “twins” Cody is right there, informing the rest of the class of Owen’s underwear preference.

Cody has decided that if Mallory’s gonna be a bitch about this whole pretend marriage thing, then he’s going all out to make this exercise as unpleasant as possible. But letting Mallory know just how he puts his “fertile imagination” to use? That’s being a little crass.

If Cody is the 21st century analogue of Les, it stands to reason that we need to pair him with a blond chick who despises him. Meet Mallory Brooks, Cody’s own Cindy Summers. Her initial Edward Munch-ian horror at being paired with the bespectacled geek quickly gives way to utter disdain.
