Crayzito Finito

Since today’s strip does nothing to move the story along, let us attempt to get at the genesis of “finito binito [sic]”:

Finito Benito
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Finito Benito comes from the North American Aviation B-25J Mitchell Medium Bomber airplane named “Finito Benito Next Hirohito.”  This B-25J bomber was attached to the 12th Air Force, based in Naples late in World War II.

The name Benito refers to the Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. Hirohito refers to the name of the Japanese emperor during World War II. Italy and Mussolini fell in 1943 while Japan and Hirohito fell in August 1945…[t]he name…was painted in red on the upper surfaces of the wings, as opposed to the usual placement on the nose of the airplane.

Ill Postino

Today’s strip wastes no time setting up the drama. Crazy Harry just spent the weekend cataloging his comics collection, exchanging cheery banter with his dumpy wife. Today, however, as he lurches onto his customary perch at Montoni’s counter, even “the Funkman’s” too-cheerful greeting is not enough to elicit a smile. Looks like the USPS’s financial woes have at long last trickled down to Westview.

Damn Your Hide

Well! Who’s sounding like a “pedantic schoolmarm from a bitter hollow” today? I’m sure all you “hidebound literalists” in the audience, as well as all you beady-eyed nitpickers, feel duly chastised for dismissing Serious Storytelling Art as mere “comic strips”!

…Is all of this some sort of attempt to justify the continued existence of comic strips or something?

Nope, just more of Tom Batiuk railing against us Philistines…

What's a Meta For?

Our first real place”? If you go by this strip from 2008, Darin and Jessica got married about ten years ago. Darin had rarely been seen (and Jess not at all) until they appeared on Les’ doorstep in April of 2011. So if this old apartment over a pizza parlor is their first real place, where and how had they lived before Moore Manor? Staying with friend after friend until they wore out their welcome?

Army Brat

The CW in the Army? I like it…in the unlikely event that TB follows through on the implication in this strip, that is.

Less shocking than Cory’s announcment that he’s enlisting is the fact that Batiuk is indeed following through from the Sunday strip three weeks ago. As was noted when we saw Cory doing those chinups at the recruitment booth, an aimless, able-bodied young man such as he might benefit from a stint in the military. Looks like it’s already having an effect on the boy: he’s already ditched his Wilma Flintstone necklace.
