Where There's Smokey…

Much to the dismay of everyone reading this: Les has survived his softball mishap with just a smudge on his nose (no black eye?) and, as Les himself predicted, a pair of broken specs.

Cayla’s Mount-Rushmore scaled profile in panel 1 reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite’s line: ” It took me like, three hours to finish the shading on your upper lip.”

So after a week of meeting Cayla’s family, Les finally comes to the realization that his prospective father-in-law is Crankshaft’s Smokey Williams; the Smokey Williams, I guess, since Les apparently has heard of him. It also appears that Smokey is no longer among the living, since he is represented by a softball on the mantle, and the picture that Crankshaft took of him and Cayla in today’s CS.

Eye on the Ball

The count is oh-and-one; Muppet-mouthed Les is looking for a hit…here’s the pitch…Les swings and POW! right in the kisser! “Calamity Cayla” has struck again! If this was an animated cartoon, I’d loop that second panel and watch it again and again and…

"Good Sport" ≠ "Good at Sports"

Well, what do you know: Les has grown a pair and stepped up to the plate. Trying not to embarrass her man, Cayla serves up a meatball, right down the middle, which Les, to no one’s surprise, swings at an misses by a mile. Summer in panel 2 must want to hang that massive head of hers in shame.

Designated Quitter

Cayla’s relatives break out the sporting goods, and Les’ smug attitude quickly evaporates. He doesn’t just look apprehensive at the thought of playing some ball; in panel 2 he looks genuinely afraid. Why, he’s white as a sheet! Perhaps he saw Monday’s Crankshaft strip and is aware of the damage Cayla can do on the diamond…

I Drink Alone

Keisha returns home after a long night of bustin’ heads with her gang, the Baseball Furies. That cold bottle of Cristal would go down real good…Better put it back on ice, though; once Cayla tells her daughter who Les was gettin’ “busy” with, we’re goin’ extra innings!
