  1. What is this, some sort of Valentine’s Day-related claptrap? Rocky and Cory? What the hell are they doing there? I thought they were in the army, weren’t they? Are his (LOL) readers supposed to just fill in these massive continuity holes themselves and if so, is that still called “writing”? Because it’s more like Mad Libs.

And Mason and Cindy? Seriously? Right there in Montoni’s, right in front of Funky? Why? And ewwww.

The checkered red & black shirt is now officially my least favorite piece of Leswear. Look at him there in panel two (lots of those two-panelers lately BTW), politely smirking at Funky’s witless observation while secretly enjoying seeing his old pal’s ex-wife humiliating him once again. And all the while he’s sitting there in that checkered shirt like he’s Anton Bugleboy or something. God I hate Les so much, why does everything have to involve him?

  2. Well warning’s of possible clickjacking on Comics Kingdom so I’ll just say this here.
First off, how the hell old is Mason? Cindy should be in her fifties. Hell the whole reason she got pushed out of her job was her age. Now it is entirely possible that he would date someone probably fifteen years or older than him, but in my experience that’s pretty rare.

Second, isn’t flirting with the guy you’re interviewing kind of a bad idea for a journalist? But then, this is the same person who used her time as an anchor to shill Les’ script for a film that was never even made. She probably just gave the same paper for every class on ethics in college and her professor was too embittered and depressed to even care.

And this is the development for Cory. Because he and a female soldier worked together, they are interested in each other. Nothing about him helping with a volunteer organization for soldiers at risk of suicide or anything? Sure there’s more to writing about soldiers than that, but there’s a lot more to having two people of opposite genders in a team than writing about romance.

  3. A band of brothers? (*Sighs, rubs temples*) Okay, look. Rocky is a girl. They ARE fellow cadets, yes, but that still made little sense.
I bet Batom just used that phrase because the word “band” is in it.

  4. This would me more sense if Les said “It looks as if we’re the victims of bad writing.” That way, Funky’s response would make more sense.

  5. I just can’t get over how TB will beat us over the head with intros for one character (Mason Jarr) and completely pull another one out of his ass after 1+ years (Rocky…. did we have a last name? i’m guessing Rhodes, then).

Does Les look a little disappointed? Maybe his dream date didn’t work out as planned…

  6. If anything, this proves that Batom® didn’t enlist Rocky in the Witless Protection Program.

Is St. Les the Righteous Smirker now wearing a red plaid shirt? Wowsers!

@oddnoc: I lost track of when this arc took place, as it took Batom® two weeks to advance one hour of actual action (e.g., the endless “Mason Jarr The Movie Actor is coming to town!” blathering). It could still be about one month behind.

  7. The sad thing is, “Rocky Rhodes” wouldn’t be the dumbest character name in Funky Winkerbean… not by a long shot.

  8. Wait a minute…who the heck is Rocky? Why don’t I remember this character? Someone please refresh my memory.

  9. In all fairness, I believe there was a strip stating that Corey was getting out of the military around Christmas.

  10. @Dave – Rocky was a fellow soldier in Corey’s unit. Her mother gave Holly a comic book. Funky and Holly were surprised that “Rocky,” hitherto unseen, was a female (“Roxanne”). Since she probably won’t appear again for a couple of years, this paragraph is pointless.

@The Diva – sorry about the down vote, my finger slipped.

  11. The ONE TIME in my life where I have the opportunity to reference the 1990s Mr. Pibb mascot and that reference actually makes sense, and the strip isn’t available for preview so I have to do it after the fact. It’s a conspiracy, I tells ya.

Anyway, panel 1 Cory is a dead ringer for the 1990’s Mr. Pibb mascot the second he opens that twisted maw.

At least I was right about Les smirking, not that those 1-1 odds did anything for me.

  12. @beckoningchasm and TFH: Thanks for the Rocky explanation, Like Dave G, I had no recollection of a Rocky in this strip.

Montoni’s must have something really special in its pizza sauce. We have come to learn it is not only the financial and social epicenter of Westview, it is also the most romantic. The pizza app really did wonders for that place.

  13. Yes, Mr. Batiuk, I should be watching Band of Brothers instead of reading your crap comic strip. *Sigh*. It amazes me how many times terrible writers and directors do this same mistake over and over again. Never mention a good movie during your crappy movie.

  14. Just saw Jupiter Ascending (and I’d say unless you’re into loud and pointless and confusing – don’t) but it would explain Cindy’s youthful look – she’s been dipped into the youth goop that is part of the plot (I use that only in the loosest of senses) of the film.
otherwise I’m at a loss why Funky looks late 60’s and Cindy looks in her 30’s.

  15. IMO it’s just incredible that he didn’t devote even one sentence of dialog to explain why Cory & Rocky are there. Just like with the SJ thing, suddenly something just “is” in the Funkyverse with absolutely no regard at all for continuity or common sense. Cory was just home for the holidays, so is he STILL home or did he come back home or what? Were they transferred to Fort Dayton or something?

  16. “otherwise I’m at a loss why Funky looks late 60’s and Cindy looks in her 30’s”

Because women are evil shrews who age you prematurely. I prefer the warm, pure embrace of comic books.

    Sincerely,

    Bathack
