Bully For You

Hey gang! SoSfDavidO here, hopping in here to snark after BeckoningChasm’s most excellent stint! Here is a link to today’s strip.

Whoa, panel one is satisfying on several levels, but what exactly is being slammed here? It looks like Bull just bitch-slapped Les but the SLAM sound effect suggests the locker maybe got shut on his head? Either way, it’s satisfying, even though it screws up the “Bull never really hurt Les” canon we’re led to recently believe.

Make up your mind TB. Was Bull a bully or not?

What’s with Les’ stupid face in panel two? He looks almost neanderthal there. Nice tape job today too, I count six visible pieces and probably like eight more behind Les’ head.

Les was a Senior too, by the way. And retconned into being Bull’s friend. Why do we care about details when the artist is mailing it in?

This would’ve actually been funny if Bull had something like “They gave me the senior discount at breakfast this morning”. Instead, it’s just typical Batiuk misery.

  5. SpacemanSpiff85

    Had said something, I mean.

  6. “I’ve been counting the days until I retire.”

Tom Batiuk, thank you for finally ‘fessing up to something we’ve all been aware of for years. You’re only doing this strip because of an award you’ll get when it turns 50 years old in March 26, 2022.

  7. Time was, Bull could at least enjoy smacking Les’ smug face. Now he just waits for the day when he can stop seeing it all the time.

Did the idea for TB’s great bullying story arc come to him after he caught the first 20 minutes of Dazed and Confused one Saturday afternoon on the local CW affiliate?

The evidence, so far, says that is a strong possibility.

  9. Here’s your bullying arc, folks. Bull thinking that he was the king of the world only to realize thirty-five years later how hollow it all was. Nothing that grandchildren like Chullo or Glasses do can matter because the focus is on young adults like him and Les. Also, thanks to Androsky for the reminder that Dinkle has always been a grandiose twit who overestimates how important he is in the grand scheme of things.

What’s with panel 1? There were no bricks at Westview High back then?

  11. “I’ve been counting the days until retirement, when I can begin counting the days until the sweet release of death.”

  12. $$$WESTVIEW ONCOLOGIST$$$

If Bull is tired of his job, then why the hell didn’t he take that college position a while back? He voluntarily spurned the offer right? Or maybe he didn’t? To be honest, I care so little about these characters I can’t remember the plotlines.

  13. Professor Fate

Death sweet death were are you? I’ve been waiting so long.

  14. The lesson here seems to be, “Being a high school student is the greatest thing ever. Once you leave high school, you become nothing–or worse.”

Which makes it odd that Tom Batiuk decided to take his cast out of high school in the first place. They were happy, now they’re not.

(in a Professor Farnsworth voice) Good news everyone! The new “Bloom County” is now on GoComics.

  16. As I recall, Bull accepted the college position but was subsequently rejected when the original candidate who had rejected the job offer changed his mind and decided to accept anyway.

  17. Panel 2: Les’s left eye is made of bricks! Ah! Ahhhhhh! It’s made of briiiiiiiiiiicks!

Yes, I know that’s the colorist’s fault and not TB’s.

Well, if TB can follow up yesterday’s strip, i guess so can i:

    @bobanero

That would make sense in Battys universe. Heck, Bull would also be entitled to a kill fee.
