It swings both ways…

“The Bleat” door I mean
Opens out in today’s strip
Unlike on Tuesday

The ABC News
Picks up a teen’s business blog
Sure… why the heck not?

Owen and Cody
Glare, unimpressed, at Logan
I do not get why

With successful blog
Why does Logan have a need
to work on “The Bleat”?

Check it out you all
The world’s narrowest table
And it’s in Westview!

Speaking of tables

  1. Yeah, this Logan girl really isn’t Owen’s type, what with her garish spectacles, wiry hair and above-average intelligence and all. He’s more attracted to those “natural beauty” types, like Mallory and Maris and Summer Moore. I like how BanTom gives her some absolutely absurd journalism credentials too, just to make sure we get the message here, that being “this Owen guy is a real dick”. Her “business blog”, “ABC”…yeah, sure Tom, whatever you say.

  2. With all this talk of female blogging I have a sneaking suspicion that TB saw a profile of Tavi Gevinson about a year ago, although she’s been around longer than that.

Hey TB, I know starting a blog and magazine before you’re out of high school is no “Rapping Around” but Funky is no Sassy either.

  3. I’m really starting to think Batiuk thinks a blog is a video thing. Which is odd, because he has a blog on his own site.

  4. So what was Owen and Cody’s journalism experience prior to joining “The Bleat”?
All we ever saw was that Owen was a terrible trumpet player and that Cody knew nearly as many “Oklahoma!” lyrics as Forgetful Jones.

  5. Are these just the morning announcements we’re talking about here or are these idiots doing an actual daily newscast? Maybe if Batiuk would bother with trying to write an actual coherent story for once, we’d know and this garbage might almost come close to nearly making sense.

  6. I guess that The Author thinks that a “business blog” which I assume parrots earnings statements and “analysis” by fund managers (like the content on CNBC) somehow rates above the content of Maris’ blog. Just goes to show how little actual thought goes into the strip. Also – where exactly dues he think ABC would put this mythical content that they allegedly picked up? Nightly News? Nightline? I think its length alone would preclude its fitting in Nightly News and its limited scope would preclude its inclusion in the tightly focused format of Nightline.

  7. I’d trust a high school freshman girl’s views on makeup a lot more than on business.

  8. Batiuk has no real idea of what actually makes sense for the setting because he’s too busy being angry at a world in which he was never a cool guy. It doesn’t matter what’s plausible or how big a jerk he looks like, he wants to have been a social lion admired by all and that absence angers him. I was never BMOC and I don’t waste my time feeling robbed because I have something he doesn’t: common sense.

  9. “She said that she was working for the A-B-C News,
It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use…”
    –Elvis Costello.

    Seems to apply here.

  10. “Yes, I did a business blog about the Lewis and Clarking of vendos on solo car dates, and the killer shark issues that often arise as a result of Jack and Jilling of the market. Just yesterday, Buddyblog called me about blogging for them. Blog. Blog blog blog. Other cool internet words. Blog blog. Blog.”

  11. First off, if a freshman high school student in a dump like Westview had achieved something as significant as having their work picked up by ABC news, they would already be well known.

I guess the joke here is either “Men conduct job interviews with their brains but make hiring decisions with their balls”, which may have been funny in the 70s, or “Owen doesn’t know what ABC news is, and there is no real hope for the younger generation”, which isn’t really funny either.

I’m guessing that Bernie Sliver will also demonstrate some outlandishly improbable journalistic credentials, but Owen and Cody will still go with Maris.

  12. Students in the Brunswick BEAT program spend countless hours learning about journalism and producing news stories. Now, a local cartoonist is taking inspiration from the program for his syndicated comic strip…Tom Batiuk joined the students on set recently for an interview, but he’s also been hanging out at the studio behind the scenes to learn how the high school news program operates…He wrote a storyline in his “Funky Winkerbean” comic strip that includes a school news program for students at the fictional Westview High School. “It was time to move on from the school newspaper to this,” Batiuk told student journalist Alexis Gemelas. “Thanks for letting me hang around and make my strip real.” He said observing the school’s television journalism program inspired him to update his comic strip to be “a little more current.”

Local cartoonist gets backstage look at Brunswick student journalism program” from the Medina Gazette, June 2, 2015

  13. TFH: If anyone bothered to tell her to read Funky this week (20% chance), right about now Alexis Gemelas is wishing she had skipped the earrings and talking to the old visitor about her blog last year.

“It was time to move on…” Listen to yourself, TB.

  14. After reading @TFHackett’s post I think it’s rather frightening that the Author seems to actually do some research about the things he writes about – – which makes how he manages to get thing so amazingly and totally wrong even more confounding.

  15. Don’t know which is more stupid, Owen and Cody never hearing of ABC News or ABC News hiring a high school freshman from Podunk USA to do a blog for them. In either case the writer is certainly delusional if he thinks either premise is remotely amusing.

  16. It is interesting that Batiuk was inspired “to update his comic strip ‘to be a little more current'”, yet he writes these things almost a year in advance. I suspect we will see a reference to Jeb Bush as the GOP presidential nominee in “Funky Winkerbean” in the coming months.

  17. BTW, ABC recently replaced Logan and her business blog with one from a younger and prettier girl.

  18. You know…..I think Owen & Cody have careers as judges for a TV singing competition.

  19. Ah, so Tommy is still creeping around high schools looking for inspiration. Or so he claims. Ugh.

After seeing that picture of him above, I think I might start calling Batty “Real Life Les.”

  20. @Double Sided Scooby Snack:
Guess what inspired that Sunday strip of Les leering at all the freshman blondes?
