It looks like Seattle PI is having some issues at the moment so today’s strip isn’t quite ready for preview! My money, though, is that the sneezing subplot is still in full-force today.

I’m going to take a shot at this. Given that this is Funky Winkerbean and given that it’s written by Tom Batiuk, I think the answer is going to be this:
Mason has an allergic reaction whenever Cindy isn’t around.
If these were likeable characters, that would be a bit sweet (more saccharine really). But since they’re loathsome cretins, it comes across as contrived and stupid.
Perhaps he’s allergic to Cindy’s massive stash of anti-aging creams and potions. Because you know, she’s really, really, really old. Every Cindy arc usually centers around her age, even though she’s drawn as a seventeen year old, so maybe that’s his “problem”.
First of all, well said, Epicus. I don’t “get” Cindy at all. It’s like Batty wants us to forget she went to school with imbeciles like Flunky and Beardo McMailman, who both look like they’re in their 70’s. The harsh reality is even the loveliest of women can’t escape certain telltale signs of aging — There are certain sags and wrinkles that always show up by the time they’re in their 50’s, if not about 10 years before. We do get that Cindy still looks good, and Batty portrays this by making her look about 20.Hell, it’s EASY to make a 20 year old look cute! Requires some real artistic talent to make a woman look 55, yet still attractive. Batty lacks that talent. I wonder if the new artist will copy Batty’s bad work with Cindy, or try to improve upon it.
Anyway, I guess we’re supposed to think he’s going to realize he’s allergic to Cindy so that he’ll have an excuse to evict her and make room for Maryanne Pepperspray, That won’t happen. Batty loves to fake us out. We’re used to that. But Cindy moved in LONG ago.I forget how long it’s been, but it’s been a while. And she’s not even in the room with him now. Guessing something really stupid and contrived is about to happen. Again.
Mason acts like this is a new development when Cindy hasn’t been seen at a California residence other than Mason’s since she moved out there to take the Buddyblog job. In fact, they were explicitly shown to be living together in late September of last year. I’m sure Mason’s allergy is being caused by something colossally stupid that isn’t Cindy, I just wanted to point this out.
On the plus side, I do kind of enjoy Mr. Director’s Zoolander pose in panel 3.
Another example of what makes FW so aggravating and stupid. Why not have Mason sneezing up a storm on Monday, realizing what is happening on Tuesday, then working the story toward its resolution instead of endlessly dragging out the premise for day after interminable day? It’s just plain shitty storytelling, like that pitiful nonsense a few weeks ago with Jessica on the phone, which meant nothing and led nowhere. If every single “story” you write requires endless amounts of pointless filler, why are you writing “stories” at all? As I’ve been braying about for years, the whole idea that FW took some brave quantum leap from “gag a day” humor to “real storytelling” is all a myth, as his little stories are actually LESS difficult and imaginative than his old gag-a-day format was.
This is what bothers me. Batiuk did really well when he was telling the story of a grade Z Archie gang whose longest arcs lasted about three weeks before they reset things. Once he decided that he ‘had’ to be respectable, people started to lose respect for him.
Who’s the guy trying to moonwalk in the last panel?
Cindy obviously has a pet cat or dog. Insert “he’s allergic to her pussy” joke here.
Is it me, or didn’t Cindy move in like a year and a half ago? And only now the allergies start?? Then again Masone is a morone so I’m not shocked he pointed out the wrong culprit…
We all know this engagement is getting broken and Cindy will run crying back to Westview, but this *can’t* be the trigger, can it?
Cindy has a moldy snatch.
he is sneezing because its a sign of his intuition. It will turn out Cindy is pregnant with Mason Jr. and he’ll stop sneezing when she tells him
