Connection Issues

Link to Today’s Comic.

Internet is down at my apartment. So working off of my friend’s phone turned into the world’s coldest slowest hotspot. So I’ll keep this short.

All I will say is that it is very rude of Les to walk in on Harry and DSH when they’re trying on tuxes and rehearsing their wedding vows. And I had no idea DSH had left the-one-armed bandit, and Harry had divorced Mrs. Eliminator. But then again, when was the last time we saw either of them with their ‘wives’.

This would have been funny if those tuxedos were tuxedo t-shirts… and if none of these characters were in the strip… and if comic books and Comic-Con weren’t key elements of the dialogue.

    Just minor changes.

The folks over at “Six Chix” must be kicking themselves for not coming up with that punchline fist.

Wow, so John actually does own (or more likely rented) an outfit other than the Batman shirt.
Or damn, they could be about to leave for Pete’s surprise spur of the moment wedding, that Darin was trying to call Les about, for some reason.

“He left his phone? Why didn’t he just use it to call down there?”

“I dunno. To set up another crappy and implausible punch line?”

All that work and all those contrivances and completely abandoning all logic just to get that “formal Fridays” gag in there…he’s a master anti-craftsman.

He left his phone? It’s 2018 (or maybe further in the future in the Funkyverse). Is there anyone with a cell phone who, except by accident, ever leaves home without it?

Implausible set-up, lame punchline – he’s two for two.

Wow, the artwork today REALLY sucks a wet one. What’s with the weird off-white shading in Cayla’s phone conversation word balloon? The jaggedy (indicating electricity) mouth-funnel on her dialog balloon (and the way Boy Lisa is holding a phone to his ear) already indicates he’s speaking to her via his cell phone device, there’s no need to start tinkering around with multi-hued word balloon background on top of that, as it’s just overkill. As is the way the panel two balloon is crushing Cayla’s head (had to save space for that hilarious punch line visual) and panel three Les, who’s a cross between the Les we all hate and despise and some sort of circus freak. Way, way too many comma-eyes going on today too. Yuck.

“They” told Les and Cayla they could bring one guest? Who? I assume she means the awards committee, who will likely provide hospitality services for their honored nominees, which would mean they’d have no need for a “tour guide” at all. Meanwhile the hapless Boy Lisa, whose illustrations made the award nomination possible in the first place, apparently isn’t even going. It’s that attention to ensuring that no element of the story will make any sense in any way that makes FW so gosh-darned fun to destroy.

  7. Speaking of being too stupid to pour piss out of a boot, let’s talk about how this is the same sort of twee crap I once saw in his failed submissions to DC and Marvel. He’s got a tin ear for dialogue and it’s attached to a brain made outta granite.

    • The Nelson Puppet

Well said, Paul Jones! “Twee” is exactly the word to sum up the Batyuck oevure.

  8. One can easily imagine the author coming up with “formal Fridays” and then running around a really tiny baseball diamond. I’m surprised he hasn’t developed bruises with all the back-slapping he gives himself.

It’s funny because these two assclowns are acting like they haven’t been to Comicon a thousand times already, that they don’t know that they can just bum free insider VIP access from Pete/Darrin, or that God forbid they pay their own way for once…

  10. Does no one who colors this comic know what bagged and boarded comics look like?

Do people actually stare into their cell phones when talking on them in their ears? I can understand if the phone is on speaker or video in your hand in front of your face, but this? No.

  12. Le Chat Bleu

The funniest thing about this one is the insane layout. That second panel is just amazing.

Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that Rick Burchett’s twitter account has been dead since last year, after retweeting a help post on how to reset your account password: https://twitter.com/rickburchett?lang=en

I’m thinking he probably reset it and then lost it.

The Comic Con arc will also doubtless be another excuse for a week or more of Cindy and Mason Jarr stories, since they are bound to be attending the convention to promote the Starbuck Jones sequel. More Cindy bikini panels!

And once again, Les just shows up….just had to tell them in person.

  15. Rusty Shackleford

One more thing, isn’t Cayla his guest?

  16. Charles

Jesus, can Burchett draw Cayla with something other than that vapid half-smile on her face?
