Driving Miss La(zzzzzzzzz)

Link To Today’s Installment

Did you ever attempt to explain a FW story arc to a non-FW reader? “Well, these two characters are driving from Ohio to Florida to pick up the one character’s mother so they can bring her to a Big Alumni Band Reunion and today the one character falls asleep in the car”. Then you get the “look” every FW reader gets when they try to explain the strip to those who’ve never dipped their toes in Batiuk’s tepid pool of failure and apathy. It’s very similar to today’s panel three.

  1. At least they own a modern car now.

Okay, so she’s asleep. So what? It’s a long drive, I’m sure you’ll have some time to talk. Also I’m pretty sure these two must spend like 23 hours a day together, is time to talk really what they need?

No one draws inspiration from the totally mundane like the BanMan does. “Heh heh, people fall asleep on long car rides sometimes”…”heh heh, it rains sometimes”…”heh heh did you see that falling leaf? I wonder what it was thinking?”. It’s really quite remarkable in a un-noteworthy sort of way.

The cliched question writers always complain about being asked is “where do you get your ideas?”. Batiuk could be asked “where don’t you get ideas?” since there’s apparently nothing that crosses his field of vision he won’t make some crappy strip out of.

  4. So. Either Holly has become unconscious due to some sort of yet-undiagnosed disease, or we’re in for at least three w̶e̶e̶k̶s̶ days of fell-asleep-in-the-car jokes.

This strip could be worse, of course, Holly could have acted on her threat to talk to Funky…

  6. The artist (!) is no help because “fast asleep” looks like “just died of a stroke.”

If there was a thought balloon in panel 3 it would be Funky thinking “Well, it looks like road head is off the table.”

  8. Rusty Shackleford

No sun at all for Funky, it was snowing when they left and now it is raining. August according to Batty.

“Batiuk’s tepid pool of failure and apathy”. That is one great line, Epicus.

Artwork quality notwithstanding, I found today’s strip kind of amusing. For a few years, my wife and I drove her mother’s car from Long Island to Naples FL for the winter, and that was our experience. She would be excited about having the time to talk, then promptly fall asleep. Anyway, at least her mother had the good sense to take the plane and not come with us on the ride.

Panel 3: Me reading Funky Winkerbean in the morning.

Seeing that Funky seems to barely tolerate his wife and she’s the one who forced him into this stupid 2,000 mile drive drive to pick up a woman who won’t call a taxi. Never mind they will have to do this all over again one the band reunion is completed (so that’s some 4,000 miles in the car) I think he would welcome her being asleep.
I do rather hope that the Author doesn’t try to stretch this out by having Funky listen to an Audio version of Lisa’s story while diving.

I’m still a bit confused as to why Holly’s mom is coming to the band reunion. Has Batiuk established this?
