Link To Today’s Thing

Yet another cutting and timely observation about This Darned Technology Today, courtesy of the BanMan, who’s never more than five or ten years behind these “modern trends”. What a lifeless, listless outing. What’s next, a gag about unreliable GPS directions? Or that annoying warning sound your car makes when the seat belt isn’t buckled?

I assume that’s Morty driving in Funky’s sepia-toned flashback, for what it’s worth. This joke is so generic it’s almost impossible to think of anything to say about it aside from the usual generic snark. It sucks, it’s boring, it’s stupid and etc. Thus far this car trip to Florida is every bit as tedious as we all assumed it’d be. Where the hell is Cell Phone Girl when we really need her?

Maybe if he puts some tin foil on the rabbit ears he can get better channels.

Or maybe if he climbs up on the roof and repositions the antenna…

Yeah, I know that won’t work, it’s just what I wish would happen here.

Up next: Funky is mad because the station doesn’t have any new eight-tracks.

So we can assume the Funkyverse has no on demand service like iTunes that can access thousands of movies and tv shows.

It’s one thing to bemoan cable tv’s “500 channels and nothing on” but completely unreal to make that claim about what choices are available via a smartphone (movies, podcasts, cat videos on You Tube, etc.)

You know you’re hopelessly jaded when faced with an infinite link to nearly every type of video entertainment ever created and nothing sounds interesting.

  4. At least the tedious and stupid observation here is only five years past its sell-by date. The one on Crankshaft has been stinking up the world since the seventies…..

I suppose we should be thankful there hasn’t been any highway rest stop jokes. Maybe next week.

  6. I thought of an actual funny scenario in this situation. Holly says, “What do you mean, you can’t find anything to watch?” And Funky replies, “I mean, nothing I can watch with you in the car.”
Admittedly that’s not very funny, but I thought it up in ten seconds, which I bet is about the same time Batiuk spent thinking up his joke, and mine is a little better.

  7. Eh, I thought today’s strip wasn’t bad. Panel 1 kinda rings true as something a kid of that era would say. There are even a couple nice period details, like the chrome passenger side rear view mirror and rooftop TV antenna in the background. But as Gerald pointed out, even an old coot like Funky could manage to find something to watch among the millions of online offerings.

You know that all of the best episodes of Bonanza are in the public domain? There is always something good on.

I agree that Panel 1 is great. Hackett has saved us from TomBa’s habit of making sedans in Westview look like Trabant knock-offs (except, for some reason, Funky’s old PT Cruiser)

“Damnit!! The VividTV online feed is showing “Filthy Fuckslut Cum Shittters Vol. VII” and I already seen it a hundred times already!

Maybe Funky is trying to watch an old FloTV device, in which case it is understandable that nothing is on. I could buy Funky as an early adopter of floundered and quickly discontinued technology, still prowling around for HD DVD releases and music on SACD…

  10. Batayersuk got the 1970s details right, right down to the wing window, but 2018 Funky is holding his phone in the wrong orientation for video. Between the tiny image and his lack of reading glasses, it’s no wonder he’s cranky.
