Biddy Budd

A hearty salute to Epicus who, like all of our fine folks here at SOSF, deserves credit for finding something to say about this strip… especially when it spends two weeks on a remarkably contrived and amazing uninteresting road trip. Yep, billytheskink here to play tour guide on this journey from an Ocala retirement community back to Palookaville, Ohio which, of course, continues in today’s strip.

Holly’s mother is a nag. That’s it. I’m reasonably sure TB used this same gag with Jeff’s vile mother over in Crankshaft several years back. If TB stretches this gag out over the week there are going to be a lot of short posts.

What Holly’s mom means is they’re driving straight toward an oncoming car.

Man, old people are just intrinsically hilarious.

  3. Normally, a fiery and fatal crash on an interstate highway involving a vehicle hitting a bridge abutment at a very high rate of speed would make me very sad, but in this case…

Um, it’ll lead to Les writing books about it, so be careful what you ask for. Title prediction: Silent Funk or (in a Crankshaft tie-in) Winkerbean’s End.

  4. Given that we’re hreaded for yet another exercise in gazing in awe at that lunatic Harry Dinkle, I want the end of this week to be Holly driving off the same cliff Thelma nd Louise did. I’m pretty sure she has the incentive to do so…..

Crankshaft: I’m going to print this one out for a colleague at work. She does CrossFit and her kids start school today. Maybe she will find this funny…nah.

  6. I’m surprised we’re on the road already. I mean, if I were solely trying to run out the clock, I’d have spent a week at the MIL’s house. “We’re going to drive you to Ohio, mom.” MIL jerks a thumb at Funky: “You mean HIM?”

And variants on the “I hate Funky” for several days.

If Batiuk could handle the technology he could dictate his little slice-of-life observations into a phone instead of having to scribble them down when they happen. Which means every insignificant observation can become the basis of his daily strips, as we see here.

Ah yes, contemporary issues affecting wacky old coots…something BatNom’s vast body of work was (guffaw) sorely lacking. Sigh.

Is there supposed to be a joke here, because all I’m seeing is a bitter woman who’s dragged her daughter and son-in-law across the country to (unnecessarily) give her a ride, and shows her gratitude by complaining the whole time.

If Funky were smart, he’d wait for them both to go into the bathroom, then take off. Panel 3 could should him at Disney, Key West, etc.

I was just thinking that what this strip really needs is yet another unlikable character…

    • timbuys

About that… Was there ever any effort at any point to establish the old(er) lady’s character? I suppose she implicitly is some kind of band nutcase to have pushed Holly so, but other than that? Anything? I’m guessing not and instead we’re getting treated to yet another poorly written and poorly drawn one dimensional character so trite as to be unable to support even the flimsiest pretenses of a gag or joke… and we’re going to get that for several more days yet it seems.

Even Borscht Belt comics are wincing at FW these days.

“Have you driven home from Florida recently, Mom?”

“No, and I think it’s completely ridiculous that WE’RE driving. I only asked you to come down and take me back to Westview. I didn’t say ANYTHING about driving all the way back, for God’s sake! I ASSUMED we’d fly!”

    “Holeeeeeeeeeee….!”

“Honestly, why can’t you listen when somebody tells you something? I know I need help getting through airports these days. That’s all I needed! What’s this driving crap?? Are you nuts??”

    “HOLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!”

This scenario is clever, would actually be entertaining, and has multiple possibilities. Therefore it couldn’t possibly exist in the Funkyverse.
