Afford-a-Bull Care

“You usually think of CTE just happening to professional football players, not washed up, never was-es like your husband.” “I know, right?” Batiuk’s already wringing plenty of pathos from the CTE uh, “epidemic.” Today he ups the ante with a shot at health care costs. He even has Linda assume the broke Mr. Monopoly “Pay Poor Tax of $15” stance for effect. Bull was around the NFL long enough to have a cup of coffee, but he went on to be a teacher, coach, and AD for about three decades. He may not be flush, but is better prepared than many to deal with a health crisis.

So is Linda/BatYak seriously trying to imply that living with CTE is more tragic and dire for her than it is for the wives of big-time pro athletes because Bull never made big-time professional money? Because that’s sure how it reads. Both Bull and Linda have/had reasonably good jobs with pensions, benefits and a union, it wasn’t like they spent their lives toiling in the comic book factory or the pizza mill.

And what the f*ck is Les talking about? Les found out about Bull’s CTE over two years ago! His old pal Bull is diagnosed with CTE and Les still associates it with pro football players? I hate it when The Great Writer suddenly forgets the past events of his own stories and just blithely forges ahead anyway without ever stopping to go back and see what he’s already written before. He has no problem with digging those old “John Darlings” out of the trash but God forbid he remembers the events of two years ago.

Well actually, it is less expensive for NFL players to get treated and deal for CTE, since they’re dead when it’s diagnosed, unlike Bull.

I”ve had enough with this stupid arc. I don’t care if it’s 10 years in the future, steroid abuse may be just as likely a factor in brain damage.

  4. This is just pathetic in every way. As many have pointed out, stop trolling for awards, Batiuk. You had your chance and you shanked it.

Nice lettering on the door, though. “Mr. Moore, Language Arts.” Yeah, like anyone would believe that.

Other than that, the “art” is terrible even by this strip’s standards. You’d think this might bring some sense of shame to the “creators” but. hey, when you’re looking for awards…heck, even nominations…well, any port in a storm, I guess…

I’ve started to wonder about something. Is Batiuk frustrated that he didn’t become a big comic book artist, or does he lament not staying in the school system? He could be collecting a nice pension and washing birds with Tony Montoni right now in the Panhandle instead of hanging on for some silly t square award.

Even by Funky standards, the first panel has the worst art ever seen in a national comic in a long time.

Who wants to bet that Flash #121 is a favorite of Batiuk’s?

  7. comicbookharriet

“And to top it all off my treatment for spontaneous transitory microcephaly is intermittent at best!”

You’re right. Linda’s head is getting bigger in each successive panel. If this were a Sunday strip her head would probably pop by the last panel.

  8. billytheskink

TB misspelled “dignity” in the final panel.

  9. Paul Jones

I’m sure that in his mind, a shrew bitching about how much money her meal ticket didn’t make is sympathetic. Batiuk is just off by three letters.

  10. Wow, that last panel. Linda! He can see your outfit just fine, you don’t have to be *that* desperate.

I wonder if she’s going to keep it up after Bull is gone…

Teachers always complain about money, but here in Ohio teachers do quite well for themselves. Bull has better insurance than everyone in the private sector, a goon pension. When you factor in days actually worked, teachers base pay is actually quite good.

Our local district is shilling for a levy in a May. There is a site where you can see the salary for each position. Top salary: Football Coach at $169,000 a year.

So STFU it Linda and be glad you both work for the public schools.

I smell an imminent fundraiser at Montoni’s!! At least I think that’s what I smell…

  13. Eldon of Galt

So we’re getting complaints about the crappy panel one artwork and Linda’s little tiny head, but her head is far too large in panel three, so it averages out, and things are just fine. Right? Right?

  14. timbuys

Rich sportos are the worst, amirite?

  15. ian'sdrunkenbeard

Good catch on Mr. Monopoly, TFH. If her pockets were turned inside-out it would be close to a copyright violation!

  16. Epicus Doomus

And note how neither Les or Linda have expressed any genuine compassion or concern re: Bull at all thus far. BatHack really ought to bag this arc before he buries his head completely up his ass, as he’s real, real close right now.
