What began as a “Les Tries to Write Something” arc turns out to be nothing more than a year-end strip dump of leftover gags. We’re transported (or transposed, to use a musical term, ah=HAH!) from Moore Manor to Dinkle’s Den, where we behold the miracle of a deaf man enjoying music.

I can’t help but wonder how much Les’ fitful creative process—including frequent breaks for things like surfing the web, random showers, and binge eating—is a reflection of Batiuk’s own. At any rate, it’s nice to see Les summon the strength to get his own food for a change rather than have Cayla fetch it to him.

Should be right up the alley of “Lord of Language” Mr. Moore, and likely a bookmarked site for Tom Batiuk as well. Les, after all, must keep his pedant game strong so he can continue to make his students and everyone else he meets feel ignorant and inferior every chance he gets. And say what you will about Batiuk’s craft: his dialogue may be tone-deaf and stilted, and his jokes are by turns weak or incomprehensible (or in the case of today’s strip a little of both), but you’d be hard pressed to find fault with their grammatical construction.

Today’s “contemporary issue affecting young adults”? The high rate of turnover among comic book artists. I wonder if the artist is “leaving the book” because he’s sick of having to work with the deadline-averse Pete Robertini? In any event, it seems that Batiuk just realized that Crazy Harry, though he may look like it now, was not born in the 1940’s, and has updated young Harold’s appearance (compare with this strip from 2010).

Is Dinkle and Harriet (w/violin) now living there?
I had been wondering about the plump little lady violinist too. It’d be nice to see Harriet supporting her husband’s interests (in other ways besides “putting out” for him). But alas, a check of the archives turns up this strip from last June in which in which Dinkle comes home to Harriet after rehearsing the band.
