Naus-talgia

It’s over? The wedding is over?? You’ve got to be kidding.

Les and Cayla set up dozens of chairs; for whom? We saw, but never got to meet, a couple of Cayla’s presumptive relatives; and didn’t see any relatives of Les’ except Summer. Instead of a heartfelt, moving toast to the happy couple, we got Bull’s backhanded “overpunted his coverage” compliment. Nothing whatsoever to show us what is so special about these two becoming one, aside from the fact they did so on their front lawn. Trust Tom Batiuk: on those rare occasions when you want him to spend more time on a story arc, he drops it like a Scapegoat dropping an end zone pass.

Married for ten years already, Jess and Darin have just moved into their “first real place” (the apartment over Montoni’s). At this rate, who knows, they might even have their own car before the decade’s out. Meanwhile they must depend on Fred and Ann for a ride home, which mean they must endure a “newstalgic” tour of the Fairgoods’ old neighborhood.

I Like "No Buts" and I Cannot Lie

I do want to ask, though…what’s with the dropping leaves? They seem pretty pervasive lately.

For what it’s worth, every strip in October has depicted falling or fallen leaves (except for when Les was inside watching a Lisa Tape). At this rate, there won’t be much of a “beautiful golden canopy” left for our bride and groom. Today the whole town of Westview is brought to a standstill; neither pizzas nor mail shall be delivered. Out on Les’ front lawn, the guests regard one another anxiously, while One of Cayla’s Relatives (do we know who? Does it matter? No.) makes a last-minute adjustment to her gown.

The Wedding Un-planner

I suppose that the reader is expected to chuckle at Les’ lackadaisical approach to wedding planning: typical last-minute male thing, amirite? But Cayla’s reaction could serve as a response to any number of instances of TB’s own sloppy storytelling, e.g., Summer in April of her senior year: …”I’m going with my dad to check out a college this weekend.” “Seriously? That just occurred to you?”

What's a Meta For?

Our first real place”? If you go by this strip from 2008, Darin and Jessica got married about ten years ago. Darin had rarely been seen (and Jess not at all) until they appeared on Les’ doorstep in April of 2011. So if this old apartment over a pizza parlor is their first real place, where and how had they lived before Moore Manor? Staying with friend after friend until they wore out their welcome?
