A single phone call reveals what a most snarkers and my long-dead grandmother suspected; Summer will be going to Kent State. With most folks a lot more wary of the value of a college education I’m not sure Les should be making his smirk/smug satisfaction face.
In a development that should surprise no one, Summer II got invited to Kent State as well, causing Cayla to break out into her best hatchet-face.

Haha, it’s true! Check out Cody’s rival! He has Ed Crankshaft’s nose. Of course, he’s an Adonis compared to Cody, whose looks on in abject dismay. If I were directing this strip as a movie, panel 3 would be a “dolly zoom” (I had to look up the term), aka the Vertigo effect. I’ve worked up a crude animation to illustrate.
I still can’t figure out how Owen’s fake texts were meant to dissuade Cody from pursing Summer Moore, and rather than making things better, Owen’s “fantasy girl” justification just sounds…icky.
I wonder if there’s a correlation ‘twixt the volume of text in a week of FW’s and the suckiness of that week’s plotline? ‘Cause again today we see Cody and Owen dwarfed by looming clouds of verbiage, including Cody’s expository “In her answer to my text message, Summer said…” Cody decides to “ratchet up the relationship” (which doesn’t yet exist) by sending the object of his affection the 21st century equivalent of a mixtape. Allow me to suggest the opening track:
Yada yada yada right here in Montoni’s yada yada ‘air guitar’ yada ya—wait, is Crazy Harry playing a Q*bert game? Oh hells yeah! OK, Batiuk, I’m letting off the hook just for today.
