Away in the Shadows and Oncoming Dark

Link To Today’s Strip

I guess the idea here is that Cindy was about to say “next of kin” but caught herself at the last moment.  That seems obvious, very obvious, and I only bring it up because the ellipsis in panel two should really be followed by a double-dash in panel three.

I suppose, given how swiftly the Darkness seen yesterday pounced and surrounded her, Tom Batiuk was lucky to get any dialogue in before she was snatched into the void.

And I’m going to say that I do like the direction this arc has taken–not the trivial story elements, of course, but the way Tom Batiuk has shown each character ending up swallowed in darkness.  It’s brilliant and should happen more often.

  1. Why do I get the feeling that the only reason TB brought Cindy back was so that it would be easier for Funky to get in touch with her. If Cory doesn’t die, the Batiuk is going through this who plot contrivance for nothing.

bathack after 40yrs should draw people same panel to panel

Sometimes BatNard buries his characters under an avalanche of misery, like he used to always do with Lisa. Then other times, it’s more like water torture, a steady, constant dose of misery, one drop at a time like he’s doing this week. A clumsy sentence that inadvertently riffs on the anxiety faced by parents who think their child could be dead…ha f*cking ha. Meanwhile the story (actually just a mere premise, as stories normally go somewhere and have a point) plods onward, (still) slowly circling the drain. F*cking ponderous, man.

“Hold a second, Funky!! My source in Afghanistan has given me the name of one of the soldiers killed. He says it’s a B…Be….a Beatle Bailey!!!! My source is a Sgt. Orville Snorkel, his CO!! Wow, what a scoop. Big City, Eat your heart out!!!”

“No, they won’t usually do that until they’ve notified…until later”.

This is the exact quote. It makes absolutely, positively no sense whatsoever. Please help me out here, what is she trying to say?

And why would the new weekend anchor from the ABC affiliate in Cleveland be the one to call to get information from Afghanistan, anyway?

    I love hating this.

She’s trying to avoid saying “notified the next of kin” which is fine, but this should be a fear and pain that Holly has had before, not something new like losing fingers to frostbite.

And here are my three alternative strips for today that would make more sense than Funky calling Cindy for information. Thought and wrote them in less than two minutes.
One, Cindy calls Funky to reassure him that the odds that it’s Cory are very slim. Two, Cindy thinks to herself about soldiers she met in Iraq or Afghanistan who didn’t make it back. Three, Funky thinks that it’s been hours and so he hopes that the longer it goes with no word, the lower the odds are of it being Cory.

I wonder if Cindy actually took Holly up on her offer of free room and board until she’s “settled”? It seemed like that’s where it was going, but all that wry obnoxious banter with Funky was pretty ambiguous and stupid, so who really knows? I really thought he’d take that tired comedic premise and run with it for a week or two but then he decided to crash that helicopter and kill all those people instead. All of history’s greatest artists were known for their dark and mercurial mood swings, you know. Just saying is all.

This habit of Batiuk is by a country mile the most irritating and frustrating feature of this strip. He drops plot threads just whenever the hell he feels like with no development or segue or anything. I can understand why he’d do it if he kept writing himself into a corner like A3G or Mary Worth, but he always and without fail ends up bailing out on an arc right before it bears any fruit. Bad News Bear arc with Jared? Whoops, no longer care! Le Chat Bleu shows up again? Pffft, that was YESTERDAY, today he’s finished. Montoni is enjoying his retirement in Florida by doing some beach clean-up community service? You had three days for this arc, old man, now you’re done. Funky Winkerbean ends up mentally time traveling back to when he was a kid, querulously whines about how shitty his life is for a week? Damn, this arc is running too long, better bail out of it before we come up with any insights or anything.

Carl Sagan: “But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.”

Panel 4: Funky turns to Holly, shifting nervously behind a counter full of unsold breakfast pizza; “Cindy says we’ll know as soon as the army finds a Western Union office”, he informs her.

  10. Happy 67th birthday to Thomas Martin Batiuk!

Howard and Nester (and Carl Sagan), are you implying that Bozo the Clown was not a genius?

  11. @TFH – that bio says it’s the 14th, while my calendar shows the 13th–OH MY GOD I’ve fallen into a Time-Jump!

Happy 67th birthday to Thomas Martin Batiuk!

Shit, I share a birthday with him.

Oh well, at least he’s shown me that no matter how bad things are, they could always be worse.

Anyway, I wonder if Batiuk realizes that he’s going to need to justify all this lead-up if Cory hasn’t been killed. That’s why I think it’s almost certainly going to be Rocky, because of course it’s got to be someone they all know. If not, Batiuk could make a joke about the community’s horrifically bad taste and have them celebrate the fact that it was someone else who died this time.

  13. Batiuk was born on π Day‽ Another holiday ruined!

Panel one – Funky sits there on the phone. Suddenly a customer comes in and orders a regular slice. Funky looks up, it’s the Grim Reaper fresh in from Centerville.

That’s never stopped Mr. ‘Ed Wood would tell me to stop dropping plot points so blithely’ Batiuk before.

Since he’s a regular customer, I would hope Funky gives him a discount. At least some free breadsticks.

The thing i’ve been reminded of this week is when Wally’s squad was being pinned down by hostile fire–except it turned out to have been a video game he was playing in the barracks.

You know it’s going to be a cheap shot, you just never know how cheap it’s going to be.

Maybe the local casualty is Kahn (or Khan). The news report said that Americans & Afghans had been killed, & he’s both.
