Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Winkerbean?

Nefarious deeds are afoot in today’s strip. Where is Cory sneaking off to with his Holly’s collection of Starbuck Jones comics? It’s a mystery… for anyone who didn’t read yesterday’s strip.

What is more surprising? That someone other than the Westview high school drama department is putting on a play within driving distance of Westview or that the Winkerbean household owns TWO Batiukmobiles®?

The latter, I guess. Now that I think about it, Funky and Holly’s play probably is being put on by the Westview high school drama department and owning two Batiukmobiles® is the only way for a Batiukmobile® owner to ensure that they have a greater than 50% chance of being able to start their car.

Taking them to DeadSkunk’s Comic Store, where he finds out the real story on those comics, comes back and gives mom a big hug. *Yawn* BatHack sucks.

So the Corporal has been home (presumably for good although that’s just a guess thanks to Batiuk’s interesting “take” on narratives) for all of a few hours and already he’s obnoxiously scheming with that sinister look on his misshapen mug. Of course it’ll be something heartstring-tugging but for now we can dream.

Cory’s been in the army for years, and yet he can barely carry a box of comic books. Wow.

  4. Merry Pookster

Cory has never been held responsible for his foul actions…..just as CK Brenden Burford has never held Tom Batiuk responsible for this strip.

  5. Words cannot describe just how utterly boring and underwhelming this is.

  6. We should have guessed that even Batiuk’s desire to congratulate himself on supporting our troops couldn’t hold back his “those ungrateful kids these days!” tendencies for long.

  7. Speaking of plays and Westview High School…

“…and we can explore our common humanity through cancer and comic books that only exist in the mind of Tom Batiuk. Because WRITING.”

Cory may have tuned out his stepfather for most of his childhood, but it appears he did learn at least one thing from Funky.
    How to lift heavy objects.

What the fuck?!?!? There is actually a plot line developing in “Funky Winkerbean? “

@louder: Good guess there, I was assuming he was selling the comics to buy Rocky a ring, which of course would result in a thrilled Holly forgetting all about SJ. But I can totally see your scenario playing out too. They’re both right in BanTom’s wheelhouse: dull, predictable, trite and etc. Then again, you never know what he’s going to do next, he might forge a path so boring and so stupid no one else would have ever even considered it.

It’s actually kind of nice to see Cory doing something other than grinning moronically, which is all he’s done for the last few years. I guess having him be in the Army AND be interesting too was just too much of a challenge “artistically”, so he just chose one. Anyhow, the weird thing here is how he feels compelled to sneak around and how smug he is about it when he succeeds. The guy was just disposing of bombs in Afghanistan a few months ago, now he’s maliciously smirking over sneaking a box of comic books out of the house without his mom finding out. There’s ice water in that kid’s veins, I’ll tell you what.

He is going to sell the comics to pay back Les the Lisa’s Legacy money he stole

  12. Epicus Doomus

The Dreamer: And I slap my forehead…fantastic guess. Seems like a lot of continuity for Batom but yes, I can totally see this happening.

  13. And yet no one is considering the parable of the maiden aunt who buys a child something he was interested in three years ago. Corey might simply have outgrown SJ and wants to get Holly something nice to show how much he loves her. His problem is that his misguided mom and idiot creator don’t see this.

Only one…? Goodness, it’s like the Mullah Nasruddin story. He’s not stealing komix, he’s stealing cars!

  15. Rusty Shackleford

Who’s that lady in panel one? I thought Holly was the one with the big, bulbous nose.

  16. @The Dreamer – that’s my guess too. I have to wonder, though, what time this play is supposed to be performed. Generally, they’re performed in the evening when most comic book stores are closed.

  17. Rusty

My guess is he avoids Skunkhead John for obvious reasons, and goes to the biker looking guy in the next town (Nick the Geek?). That guy is a Vietnam vet, I believe, will remember giving Holly the comic. Perfect character to pontificate about military honor and sacred comic books.

  18. Meanwhile, KFS is cancelling Apartment 3-G – confirmed by Mark Trail scribe James Allen, who wants to take over for nonagenarian Frank Bolle.

So apparently some scant quality control still exists at King Features after all.

  19. Jimmy

If Batiuk shows Cory to truly be a heel rather than ripping off O. Henry, I will forgive the past six years of FW.

  20. MKay

Cory’s expression is disproportionately maniacal for someone who is going to sell comic books. He needs some deep breaths and a therapy dog.

The presence of DSH on the current SoSF masthead – with his ugly bulbous nose and jowls – would suggest otherwise.

  22. $$$WESTVIEW ONCOLOGIST$$$$

The look on Cory’s face seems like he has Semtex in that longbox rather than comic books. I guess this is better plot than Homeland.

The sad thing here is that Frank Bolle’s deteriorating artwork probably garnered more attention to the strip than it has in years. I do feel sorry for him, he actually was a good artist once upon a time.

  24. Madcougar92

I’m with Epicus Doomus’ guess that he’s getting a ring for Rocky with that money…

  25. $$$WESTVIEW ONCOLOGIST$$$$

–I’m with Epicus Doomus’ guess that he’s getting a ring for Rocky with that money…—

Which would one up him over Wally Winkerbean in the lame proposal meter.

  26. Rusty

@Nathan Obrol: John wasn’t there this morning, it was still Rocky. Fuck, here comes the lecture.

  27. Let me see if I understand this. Cory originally had a collection of comic books. His mother GAVE him some more books to fill out the collection. The collection is still Cory’s to do with as he pleases which includes selling it and not sharing any profits. However, because TB wants to show that Cory has assumed adult responsibilities, Cory will give all the money to the Lisa Fun Run (whenever that is) to replace the money he stole years ago and show Funky “he be a man.”

  28. @Bill: That is exactly what is going to happen. He must repay those he’s wronged and pledge allegiance to SDL.

  29. hitorque

I love how shit-for-brains is rushing out to cash in on the comics, probably willing to let them go at half their value for a quick sale… Forget negotiating, forget trying to get top price, and forget holding on to them to see if they appreciate in collector value — It’s not like there’s some huge, $100 million budget Hollywood blockbuster about to come out that will increase collector interest in the character tenfold…

  30. Epicus Doomus

Returning the cancer fun run money to Les definitely seems plausible. Like I said above, that sort of long-range continuity is unusual in the Batiukverse, but the nausea factor is definitely in character.

  31. The Dreamer

Cory will probably say that he stole the Lisa’s Legacy run money to buy the Starbucks Jones comics in the first place. So by selling them now, after they have risen in value, he can repay the LL fund with interest. October is breast cancer awareness month so the yearly LL run strips should be coming up soon anyway. Besides we all know that Cory’s true love is Summer, not Rocky and he can’t connect with her until he pays back the money
