Hey folks! SoSfDavidO here, punching Montoni’s time clock for another shift!

It’s Monday and the drama of the sold comics books and “will she say yes?” has been resolved! So what’s next? Judging from Today’s strip, a lot of story padding! Though I have to admit, I pretty much ignored any banal dialog and stared in sheer awe at the size of Cory’s baseball-glove sized mitts. I had to even count twice to make sure there wasn’t an extra finger in there somewhere.

  1. “Smitten”? It’s not often you hear that phrase in Westview without it being followed up by “with a fatal disease”….

  2. It would been nice to have seen evidence of Rocky’s infatuation for Cory displayed in a story arc. We could have replaced the DSL video are or the “Les tume-pool fantasy”arc, for example.

Wow, a terrible, terrible way to start what will no doubt be a terrible, terrible week. I guess the gag here is supposed to be Rocky’s limited vocabulary? Hilarious. And what’s going on with Cory’s face in panel three? Wisdom tooth surgery? Or did someone bump BanTom’s elbow while he was drawing this one?

But, Holly…you KNEW this already. Remember? When Cory showed you the engagement ring?

  5. Oh, great. A week of people talking at cross-purposes because they don’t use the same words to describe the same thing. Since this is for old white people, we’ll get a heaping helping of “Ungrateful young punks are murdering the language” and like it.

  6. Is that a pun I’m not getting? It’s certainly not a viable gag about the generation gap. My kid is 14 and he knows what the word means.

  7. Rusty Shackleford

Those noses. And I like how Cory becomes Funky in panel 3.

I can’t even tell if Holly is addressing Cory or Rocky. If Rocky is stumped by two syllable words, she may need remedial English with the Lord of Language.

  9. Merry Pookster

    “Smitten” is the new “transgender”

  10. I’m assuming that Holly’s surprise over something she knew was coming, was that Rocky actually said “Yes” to Cory.

How to turn today’s strip into one with a joke, ANY joke:

    Rocky: “Smitten, ma’am?”
    Cory: “I reckon it’s a small kitten…”

Yes, it is dumb and yes, I totally ripped it off from a joke about smog (a “small hog”) from that inexplicable mid-90’s Beverley Hillbillies movie that starred Jim Varney, but it is at least something. As it stands, the closest this strip comes to a punchline is how every character depicted in profile looks heavily sedated.

What the hell happened to Cory’s hair in panel 3?? Has Westview’s rapid aging force caused male pattern baldness to occur within second?? Or maybe this is proof the Batiuk ultimately wants to write about Funky being with Rocky. Would explain some of those previous Rocky experiences.
Seriously, Batiuk….stop living vicariously through your characters!!!

Holly: Sorry about the archaic vernacular, but casual conversation is clearly not my forté.

    Rocky: Archaic, vernacular, forté, ma’am?

With the word ‘Smitten’ Holly is very gently letting Rocky know that she is aware of Rocky’s pregnancy and is appreciative of old fashioned values they’re expressing by having a hurried shotgun wedding, rather than shacking up or taking modern ‘co-parenting’ classes while continuing to see other people.

She’s letting Rocky know that once, long ago, she did the same thing. And she has hopes that someday Rocky’s own second marriage will be as fulfilling as hers; that is: mildly so, once the xanax has kicked in.

Cory is moving way too fast here IMO. He’s young, he should take his time and accumulate, read and sell several comic book collections before he settles on just one, you know? After all, there are so many other comic book titles in the sea, why go all-in with the first comic book collection you get? Ditto for Rocky, I mean she might meet another guy who has a more solid comic book foundation to build upon, as Cory is all tapped out already.

I recall reading a story about “Ren & Stimpy” in its heyday, wherein it was revealed that series creator John K instructed the artists/animators to DELIBERATELY draw Ren & Stimpy differently from frame to frame!! Maybe Bantom’s doing the same thing! Only without the talent. Or humor. Or stories, etc.

  17. Professor Fate

Funky and Holly’s expressions seem less of pure joy and more ‘welcome to a life of quiet desperation amidst the omnipresent fumes of pizza from below.” Of course they are going to move in there, its’ the only apartment the Author can be bothered to draw.

  18. @bayoustu: Well, Batiuk’s big enough of a son of a bitch to be Kricfalusi….

  19. Rocky talks like Joe Friday, fer Crissakes

So Cory and Rocky are going to get married even though they have no homes or jobs. But its okay, because they are going to take over Montoni’s Pizza so that Funky and Holly can go retire to Florida and play golf with Tony Montoni (unless Tony’s dead I mean he hasn’t been heard from in a long time)

As for cousin Wally Winkerbean, who had a far worse time in the army than Cory and works in the kitchen with his therapy dog, well he’s too messed up to become the manager, and Darrin is shipped off to California, so the way is clear for Cory. Funky is going to give Montoni’s to Cory as his wedding gift!
