On Monday the Angels Start Weeping

Link to today’s strip.

Monday begins a new cycle, so today’s strip was not immediately available.  I’m going to guess we’re going to get more Cliff Anger garbage, because Batiuk seems particularly fond of that of late.  Of course, ever since Becky’s mother was left on top of a scissor-lift many years ago, I’ve learned not to be too sure of my predictions.

According to the dialogue yesterday, Cindy actually won an Emmy for her Cliff Anger documentary.  I ought to find this surprising for a number of reasons.  For one thing, I’m not sure an internet gossip site really qualifies, but never mind that.  I don’t know the rules for the Emmys.  The fact that Cindy learned nothing about Cliff (her viewers learned nothing either) makes me wonder about the quality of the work, and why it was thought award-worthy.  All we saw was people sitting in chairs chatting.   Probably Baituk shares the same low-level contempt for television that once marked one as “sophisticated,” and he feels that there are no significant awards unattached to comic books.  And of course, Cindy won and accepted her award entirely off-stage (that oughta show ‘er).

Still, I keep thinking the award was announced thusly:  “And the award goes to….Cindy Jarre, for Six Decades of Idiocy: The Cliff Anger Story!  Congratulations, Cindy, you’ve won the Emmy Award for Best Chairs!”

I haven’t seen Monday’s comic yet, but I thought maybe my computer didn’t load Sunday’s strip entirely when I read it the first time.

Regarding awards, every industry has them, and from my experience, they’re a way to keep you sending money to the organizing committee to try to win more awards.

Oh great, BatBarf has discovered emoticons. Just what FW needed…more cloying “relationship” cuteness. Does anyone get the joke here? Weather, parking…huh? And why is Jessica STILL in California? An enigma wrapped in a puzzle and shrouded in mystery, all of it smothered in suffocating boredom. That sounds about right.

I honest to God assumed it was Pete on the other end. It still makes no sense, and wasn’t Darin in L.A.?

  3. “I wouldn’t exactly call it weather 😎…” Th’ fuck does that even mean? “…I was easily able to find a parking space this morning 😜” Huh???

Do you walk to work or take your lunch?

      • Epicus Doomus

I assumed (that word again) the weather gag was referring to the typically pleasant California climate as compared to those fierce Ohio summers, but the parking punchline is totally baffling. Parking WHERE? Parking for WHAT? Why is she still in California at all? It makes absolutely no sense that she’s still out there.

The saddest thing of all is how he so desperately wanted to find an excuse to use emoticons and THIS is the best dialog he could come up with.

    • If I had to guess, and given the “joke” I do, I think the idea is that now that Comic Con is over, parking is more readily available. Of course, Comic Con was in San Diego and Jessica is in Los Angeles, but you know…

I thought the same thing. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but everyplace ALWAYS has weather. Unless that’s some weird Ohio-speak thing.

Wait, so is Batiuk saying the weather is better in Hollywood than in Down Home Ohio? I am honestly shocked. Although we’ll probably find out she was able to find parking so easily because two homeless junkies stabbed each other in the parking lot at her office, and the police tape was just removed as she pulled up.

That’s cute, thinking Jessica goes to a workplace. If anything, she sets up shop at Starbucks with other “artists”.

I didn’t know there was a Gene Simmons emoji.

I don’t like reading my own text messages, how can I possibly care about what drivel these two are chatting about?

Cameo by Durwood’s original nose in panel 1, by the way.

  7. Given his issues with women, I wouldn’t be surprised if we weren’t setting up a Jessica infidelity arc so that he can bitch about pretty girls and why they’re bad because they wouldn’t give him the time of day in the early sixties.

Oh god no, TB has discovered emojis.

Yes the weather in NE Ohio is harsh, but it isn’t endless rain in the summer. What makes summer weather harsh is the high humidity.

I still don’t know why he had to move to Ohio to do his job. It seems to me he could work remotely, like most of us do in the modern world.

Is this Durward or Masone? Who is he texting? Is this supposed to be funny?

    Sense this does not make.
    Joke this is not.
Parking? Parking? So does this means that Mrs. Boy Lisa has a job?
    Confused we are.

  12. Has Batiuk ever explain why Ayers is drawing some strips and Burchett others? Or does he considering doing so beneath him?
