Link To Sunday’s Strip

Coming tomorrow: the triumphant return of billytheskink!

Sunday’s strip is, as usual, unavailable for preview. What will it be? Another comic book cover? “Wallace McHero and Budrick the Space Dog”. A continuation of whatever this Wally nonsense is about? Something totally unrelated? Sundays are always a crap shoot (emphasis on crap), anything can happen (so to speak) and it’s as unpredictable as a line of Keisha dialog. My guess? I’m running with the theory that this “Adeela” character is Wally’s Afghani girlfriend who lost an arm when Wally got hammered at the annual enlisted man’s ball and crashed his Jeep, then she dumped him for a Pakistani comic book virgin dude after believing he was dead. But the joke’s on HER because he WASN’T!

And that’s it for me for now, I’ll be back right around when the last leaf falls and the blizzards begin, or “November” as it’s known in the Funkyverse.

  1. Well, there’s Buddy and there’s already-forgotten-her-name. Did you know that dogs are considered unclean in Islamic culture? I bet Tom Batiuk doesn’t.

Yes, Buddy must be slaughtered in the most brutal way possible.

Does Wally really walk around in his Army jacket all the time? Must make it easy to forget his PTSD.

I smell ham and that ham is fist-shaped. The way the strip and these characters infantilize Wally and his PTSD makes me sick. Must his PTSD forever define him? Can’t we get to see him make actual progress and overcome his demons? Why can’t Batom ever allow a Winkerbean any happiness?

TB has talked about how comic strips can “carry the weight of substantial ideas”… but with this past week’s slow drip of story set up I think he meant to say the “wait of substantial ideas”.

  4. The Nelson Puppet

I picture a ghostly Alfred Ryder whispering to Wally in a bad German accent: “You vill choot Adeela! You vill choot Adeela! You vill choot Adeela!”

  5. Next week on FBorFW, Elly gets into a mild collision with some nitwit who digs bombing along at near-relativistic speeds on the passenger side of school buses and freaks out. I can only imagine her reaction to the upcoming collision of faulty research and leaden moralizing.

  6. Gerard Plourde

I know I’m being trivial but I’m reminded of the author’s lack of research every time I see Wally in that Vietnam-era jacket that was no longer worn by soldiers when he served.

TB you want to know why FW has become a sad joke that the Pulitzer committee will only mention in derisive laughter? It’s because you photobomb what were hot topics with having only the vaguest idea of what they’re about. I hope Buddy tracks you down and pisses on your leg and defecates on your drawing table.

Yes… the introduction of a Muslim girl in class is really going to throw off the guy who ADOPTED A MUSLIM GIRL.

Wally has always been one of TB’s favorite chew toys. Who else would go on two tours of duty and be captured as a POW both times? You just know he wouldn’t be allowed to coast through his final semester (which oddly started in mid-October) without some kind of PTSD relapse. Based on the image in our masthead, I wonder if this is some kind of love child from Wally and Adeela, and she’s either going to blackmail him or steal him away from Rachael.

“Hallo dere! Ees thees seet taykun?”

“… put your books right there! My name’s Wally.”

Didn’t Batiuk post some sketches of Adeela on his blog early this year, saying she was going to be part of a story in the fall?

I tried looking for the sketches but kept dozing off…

Pretty sure this Adeela thing is going to be pretty forced and contrived. He’ll freak out, then despise her, then become best friends.

Ain’t nobody more woke than Batty.
