C Minus

Link to today’s strip.

I’m not a comics fan, but I looked at today’s deposit and thought “That can’t be right.”   Two seconds of dreaded research confirmed my suspicion.

Tom Batiuk claims to hold comics creators in high regard, but you know, when he can’t even spell Joe Shuster’s name correctly….

No doubt Batiuk will call his syndicate and post a corrected version, but jeez louise–this is the kind of error that should have leapt from the page and smacked him.

Of course, given the evidence of “Bantom,” and Pete’s Wandering Last Name, and, well, the strip itself, maybe he just doesn’t care.

    “Is that a Batiuk?”

“Yes, it’s an extremely rare FW outtake and the only known instance of Les Moore not being annoying. He couldn’t use it, obviously.”

    “Wow! And that one?”

“Oh, that’s a Crankshaft outtake, the only know example of a Crankshaft character under the age of seventy.”

    “What the f*ck is Crankshaft???”

Batiuk sure finds “Darin and Pete bow like they’re unworthy” hilarious for some reason. I’m pretty sure it’s the third time he’s done it in the past year or so at least.

      From now on he’s Batuik.

I guess Wayne’s World had a big effect on him.

C’mon, Batiuk. That movie was released 27 years ago. You need to update your popular culture references.

(Then again, he did have Cody and Owen reference a more recent network show that mostly watched by elderly people, so I suppose I need to be more specific.)

More fun on Batiuk’s blog. He’s got an entry of pictures of cosplayers at a convention. The first two are clearly people posing for pictures. The third is a woman from behind, bending over, who clearly didn’t know her picture was being taken. The third is a woman, again from behind, in a parking lot not even in the convention. Is that weird/creepy to anyone else?

We have a tag for “BatiukButt” on here, so maybe it’s his thing…

While the picture of the woman bending over at a table in the convention was bad, I guess I can understand the impulse of getting a picture of what I assume is the main detail of a Doctor Octopus costume. I’m much more disturbed by the Supergirl picture. That’s a picture a surreptitious pervert would take.

As a former cosplayer, my take is that he should have asked Doc Ock for a photo of the back of her costume, rather than sneak up on her while she was bent over a dealer’s table.

I remember reading an article about this a while back, about how just because someone is in cosplay at a convention, you really still need to ask if you can take their picture. Especially if you’re an older guy and you’re taking their picture from behind, I would think.

        • Charles

Trust me, I’m not suggesting that taking a picture of the Doctor Octopus cosplayer without her permission was acceptable behavior. I’m just pointing out that taking that picture of Supergirl was way more appalling. I can imagine a gentle reminder to ask first coming out of that Doctor Octopus picture, whereas Supergirl would be justified calling security.

That’s assuming Batiuk took that Doctor Octopus picture to show the detailed rig, and not the bent-over woman’s ass.

I’m assuming the Supergirl is on the phone with a trusted friend

“yeah…the weird old dude is still leering at me…”

“I KNOW! But I have to walk past him to get back into the building.”

“Yeah, I’m staying in public view, but I still can’t believe this is happening.”

“He just…I think he’s taking pictures. This is a nightmare.”

Like…good lord Batiuk, that’s serious creeper behavior

I think “Schuster” is spelled correctly here, actually. You think a two-bit store front art gallery in west Cleveland could swing a rare piece of Joe Shuster artwork? No way. This is clearly the work of Joe “Schuster”, who made a career out of penning “rare” comic artwork and selling it at relatively affordable prices to gullible collectors. His contemporaries included Charles “Schultz”, Walt “Kelley”, “Jake” Kirby, and Carl “Banks”.

And if you really want to have fun just Google “cracked Superman is a dick” and go and see how the original Supe was a psycho.

    • There used to be–and perhaps still is–a website called “superdickery” which showcased all the myriad ways Superman screwed over his friends.

There were a lot of entries.

      • billytheskink

Superdickery was a regular internet stop for me before before it had a real bad bout with pop up ads and malware. Still, great concept, up there with Mr. Kitty’s Stupid Comics and Seanbaby’s pre-Cracked comics commentary.

  6. CRM114

“Cracked” claims Supe was originally quite a psycho.

  7. Epicus Doomus

The amazing thing about this one is that there’s an art gallery full of original comic book art within walking distance of AK and this is the first these two nimrods have heard of it. You’d think that two die-hard comic book dorks would have known about this earlier. How DIDN’T they know? Are we to believe this comic book art gallery just sprung up overnight?

  8. Charles

Got to admit I’m glad this wasn’t yet another day of the superfluous and buttinski Pete interrupting Darin and Kitch’s (wtf) conversation with another crass and belittling remark about Darin. That’s the only reason he’s even a part of this stupid sequence.

Ever notice how often Batiuk uses that conceit – two characters are having a conversation and a third constantly breaks in to tease, belittle or insult one of the participants.

  9. Paul Jones

And let’s not forget how clunky and stupid-sounding their declaration of unworthiness is. That’s the problem with Batiukese: even if he does actually say stupid garbage like “I stand in line”, “solo car date” and the like out loud, he is certain it doesn’t sound idiotic.

So is it a cover, or is it a page from a story?

  11. Gerard Plourde

I’m certainly not an expert in comic book art, but that doesn’t look like examples of Schuster’s work that I’ve seen.

  12. sgtsaunders

You know, I’m beginning to think that those two guys are just assholes.

  13. Max Power

Calm down Mopey Pete and Boy Lisa, It’s Joe Shuster Art, not the man himself. I’ll bet they were like this in front of each and every exhibit at the Flash Museum.

  14. sgtsaunders

These assholes’ genuflections are getting worn out. All that ‘we-are-not-worthy” shit is now just cringe inducing.
