We Both Are So Excited ‘Cause We’re

I will admit that I’m maybe the only one around SoSF who likes the way Batiuk draws a kiss. That, and the backs of peoples’ ears, are on the very short list of things that TB, in my opinion, gets limnistically right. I know some are repulsed by Batiuk’s habit of erasing the border between the kissing characters’ faces, making them appear to be fused together at the lips. And maybe Cindy’s arm around Mason’s neck is awkward. But the closed or half-closed eyes, the attitudes of the heads…there’s a sweetness. I’m not kidding.

But we’re not letting Tom totally off the hook. Though we totally presume that these two jumped into the sack at the earliest opportunity, today’s airport kiss is meant to signify true romance. But she’s expressing a wish “to be reunited with” Mason when a) they haven’t spent all that much time together, and b) she hasn’t left yet.

Shanks on a plane

In today’s strip, Pete puts his Starbuck Jones comic down long enough to wistfully look out the window as his plane prepares to land at Van Nuys Airport. He looks remarkably content and fairly happy, how many weeks do you give that?

For SOSF’s resident beady-eyed nitpickers, Pete appears to be reading a copy of Starbuck Jones #115. This is a key issue, as Starbuck’s little blue rabbit-like pal dies in the vacuum of space because Starbuck took him out onto a disintegrating asteroid without a space suit.

Merry and Blight

SpacemanSpiff85 December 20, 2014 at 12:24 am If we had any clue at all what was going on here, this might actually have been dramatic. Batiuk likes to throw in cheap drama without any of the buildup to make it meaningful.

Cheap drama and a Sunday victory lap. Dr. Chill’s presumably good news elicits from Funky the first non-ironic smiles we’ve seen from him in months. He whips out his phone again to re-read the doctor’s text (and for the benefit of those lucky Sunday-only readers). Here’s what brings joy to Westviewvians: the news that you’re not going to die…just yet.  Batiuk wraps up this mini-non-drama with a Christmas bow in the form of an improbable, reverse engineered punchline.

Dr. Chill

Three days of strips showing Funky standing in line at the airport; jump cut to Funky’s plane touching down at…home? His business destination? Still not 100% clear on which leg of the trip this is. Well, I’m sure the flight was as miserable and boring as his time waiting in line. No sooner than he’s given permission to use his phone, Funky is rewarded with what surely is more bad news from either his own doctor or possibly his Dad’s. The next cycle of strips won’t appear online before midnight Friday, which means I’m in the dark along with the rest of y’all! It also means the next post won’t show up here until midnight. Stay tuned (yawn)…
