Should be right up the alley of “Lord of Language” Mr. Moore, and likely a bookmarked site for Tom Batiuk as well. Les, after all, must keep his pedant game strong so he can continue to make his students and everyone else he meets feel ignorant and inferior every chance he gets. And say what you will about Batiuk’s craft: his dialogue may be tone-deaf and stilted, and his jokes are by turns weak or incomprehensible (or in the case of today’s strip a little of both), but you’d be hard pressed to find fault with their grammatical construction.

What a Clone

I know that among the readers here at SoSF are a number of you who “get” comics and the comics industry. While I haven’t picked up a comic book since they cost 12¢ and bore the stamp of the Comics Code Authority (the Silver Age, I reckon), I respect and understand the fandom. So, comic book people, is any of this arc making sense to you? Because it’s giving me a migraine.

Who even said anything about “killing off the clone“? Batiuk almost (almost) succeeds in making me feel sorry for Pete, as once again he is forced to listen in bug-eyed perplexity as this three-headed monster of an editorial team finishes each others’ sentences and even speaks in unison, grinning maniacally the whole while.

Merrily We Troll Along

Batiuks aims for “bearded hipster” and hits “happy Cro-Magnon”

I’ve struggled to hang on to the notion that Tom Batiuk’s illusory superiority renders him oblivious to his online critics. But between yesterday’s “chew toy” reference and today’s panel 3, it seems that not only are some of those slings and arrows getting through, but that TB gets the last laugh. “Hate readers”, after all, are better than no readers; meanwhile, those paychecks from King Features Syndicate continue to accrue.

Sponge Nonsense

The “action” continues to alternate between the west and the east coasts…

As he did with his “shallow end of the gene pool” remark, Pete continues to speak in weird lingo.  By the way: the “clone story arc” wasn’t the chew toy, Pete himself was, even unto these editors he’s addressing (and whose names we’ll never know; let’s call them  Manny, Moe, and Moishe). Pete also continues to moan about being responsible for a story arc which he developed and enthusiastically pitched just a couple weeks ago, and which, while controversial, has proven to be enormously successful.

For A Good Time Call Anyone But These Two Guys

Link To Today’s Strip

So, what’s the “modern day equivalent” of a FW comic strip? Overdosing on muscle relaxers? Too much turkey and wine? Going to jury duty? Melatonin? Ambien?

So who’s more annoying today? The ever-mopey Pete, who acts like his dream job is nothing but pure torture? Or Boy Lisa sitting around in his socks making obnoxious snide faces as he uses the internet to complain about the internet? It’s a toss-up IMO, although Boy Lisa definitely has punch-ability to spare today. He’s almost as insufferable as that mother of his used to be. And if he’s so smart, why is he still working at Montoni’s? What a bio-step dick.

All of this nonsense might be slightly less incoherent if the whole thing wasn’t Pete’s idea in the first place. But Ban Tom got all caught up in breaking The Internet’s balls, so things like continuity and events that actually occurred in the story were pushed aside so he could take more shots at…well, us, I guess. The funniest thing about this one is that after blowing his wad in panel two, he tries to take a shot at “editors” just for the hell of it, which of course falls completely flat because readers with actual functional memories will recall that his editors were all 100% behind the idea. Again, he ignores facts in favor of taking a jab at something, then fails at that too. What a sad and pathetic debacle.
