Everything’s So-So

Link to today’s strip.

Ah, the perils of drawing your comic strip, word balloons and all, a year before you write the dialogue.  I feel certain Tom Batiuk wanted to have some reference to “medication” in Dullard’s word balloon, but alas he couldn’t make the word fit.  Too bad, as it would clarify the mysterious “they” in Ann’s balloon (supposed to be “medications” I guess) and make her reference to a “booster shot” tie it all up neatly.  It still wouldn’t be funny or good, but one could point to it as (at least) well constructed.

Oh well, can’t stop now!  Onward, ever onward, toward that 50th!

I try to point out things I like whenever I can, and I like the shadow pattern of the window on the far wall.   Somebody took his time applying craftsmanship to make that, and it is appreciated.  And unless I’m mistaken, the picture on the wall looks a little like “Christina’s World” by Andrew Wyeth.  It may not be, but I like to think someone tried to slip something of quality into this dreary waste.

F*cking BatHack, man. Fred can’t be doing well, making strides, showing any progress or anything positive, the best he can muster is a weak “so-so”. Why does he hate Fred so much? Why did Fred have to have a stroke at all? If seeing his grandson really helps, why does Boy Lisa only visit them once every few years? Why didn’t he steer any of that Phil Holt jackpot their way? The whole thing makes me sick. If this is all you have then why not just write the characters out or just ignore them going forward? Who would notice or care? WHO THE F*CK IS SHIT LIKE THIS EVEN FOR? Bah.

Dad? Dad? Dad? Since the fuck when does fucking Durward care that Fred Fairgood raised him? It’s all all about Less.

“As you can see, he was nicely embalmed. Not much else they could do. I sewed him into that chair.”

Next: Pete comes over. The actor playing Granny Annie will have to do a quick costume change.

Look at Fred’s shirt, Pete’s already been over… that’s his famous traveling green shirt.

Skyler may be a great booster shot for Fred, but Durwood is very much a pill (and I do mean pill) he doesn’t need.

I actually like the artwork today. It’s sweet and conveys love between a grandfather and his granddaughter, despite his condition.

Meanwhile, on the other side, the kids are scamming old people to sell vintage books on eBay because some horrible little monster dared ask Batiuk “What difference does it make if they changed the reason they pulled outta their butts for why the Flash can run so fast? It’s just a comic book!!”

Crankshaft was somewhat satisfying today. But how come bookstores, be they comic or otherwise, are not handicap accessible? What is it with Batty and shops that are upstairs?
