Darin’ Choice

SoSfDavidO here, and I’m gawking at a well-trod troupe at this point, which is sort of like the pronoun game only the complete opposite. Today’s strip might as well have Darin turn and deliver the last line straight past the 4th wall.

Why does Tombat do this? Does he really think new readers are joining in and trying to follow this mess? In catering to them, he’s putting off his longtime readers with dialog that no one sane would ever speak aloud.

The gears in Les’s head are spinning like Darin just dropped some amazingly profound advice or something but it should be obvious the Lisa cash cow can still be milked. Sure, why not write about Lisa? Maybe it’ll get optioned for a movie!

Pulp Dick-tion

Link To Today’s Strip

Epicus here, ready to snark away on Batiuk’s latest galling display of mindless self-indulgence. It took me a few seconds to figure out what this piece of crap was supposed to be. Apparently Les is making a little game out of his horribly butchered cancer book by pretending that he’s writing some sort of 1940’s (what a surprise) trashy pulp jungle comic. Which makes no sense whatsoever, but it did give Batom a chance to draw that snazzy comic book cover featuring (sigh) Lisa as some sort of jungle girl and Les (aaarrgh) as a chain-smoking 1940’s (sigh) hack writer. At this point it’s anyone’s guess as to what’s running through TheAuthor’s mind, although “not that much” would be a decent investigative starting point IMO. What a sad and nauseating display.

…You don’t run a script or treatment past a test audience. That would be absurd…Never mind that no one making a crappy little movie to fill the Tuesday night slot on a basic cable channel would bother running it past test audiences.

This Hollywood arc has veered so far from reality to the point where even Les begins to suspect that it’s all bullshit. And he’s right: the “testing” seems to have been conducted by a succession of random people, each person having even less connection to the industry than the last. And hotshot “script doctor” Ken Casey is totally on board with that.

…I find it interesting that Tom Batiuk gets worked up into high dudgeon when someone dares alter Lisa’s Story or question the value of comic books, but he simply can’t be bothered to respect the details in any other sphere (making films, as one example in a long list).

Yes, filmmaking ranks on par with or below the ability to make “a wicked tandoori chicken.”

Apparently.
