More Bull In The Cards

Link To Today’s Strip

This is a bit of a surprise, as I naturally assumed we’d never see that asshole Buck again, but apparently he visits the rapidly-deteriorating Bull regularly now…and lucky FW readers reap the benefits. Bull is sitting around in his old football helmet which definitely explains his head injuries, as he’s been doing it wrong all this time. Looks like another trudge down Limited Memory Lane again for ol’ Bull, who never gets to stop re-living the past he’ll soon forget. Yes, that sounds about right.

I’m looking forward to Bull beginning to forget everything, as it’ll (probably) put an end to these interminable football glory days arcs once and for all. BatNom had a choice, he could have either left Bull the way he was and just continued doing his annual football-centric gags like he always has or he could have given Bull a debilitating brain disease, gone nowhere with it then used Bull to rehash his old football-centric gags over and over. Guess which he chose? It’s like Pa Winkerbean’s Alzheimer’s, cheap pathos fodder for a few weeks then forgotten whenever there’s a weak gag to be had.

  1. “Prior to the Lisa’s Legacy Run I got to speak with Wayne Dawson and Stefani Schaefer on Fox8 News in the Morning…”

  2. I don’t see any reason Bull shouldn’t be excited to see Roger Ebert drop in. But more important this has lead me to learn of the 1925 NFL Championship Controversy, in which the Cardinals won the championship but even the team owner didn’t think they deserved it. This is a weird little fiasco and it turns out not even the first NFL Championship Controversy of the 1920s. Not even the second championship controversy of the 1920s, if you count the NFL’s forerunner association. And I love to learn about this kind of mess.

Bull has that much short-term memory?

  4. I can’t imagine why we’re having this story re-visited. Is Tom Batiuk afraid that if we have too much comic books, or too much Lisa, that we’ll be spoiled or something? “Can’t dole out the quality stuff all the time! Gotta pace it. How about something with Bull? That’ll calm the readers down, since it’s nice and dull. Not like the other stories!”

Just glad it’s not another advertisement for the Lisa charity or the Lisa book collection.

“He’s incapable of greeting you at the door or speaking for himself, but still.”

I’m impressed that Batiuk at least came back to this storyline instead of just completely dropping it like every other bit that doesn’t star Lisa, Boy Lisa, or Les.

Bull has deteriorated to the point that he’s a shut in? Or is he just using his condition as an excuse to avoid Les? I wouldn’t blame him.

That there is his drinking helmet. Wears it almost all the time now. Gotta protect his noggin in case he blacks out and falls when he tries to stagger over for another beer. Again.

  8. He’s addicted to slamming the sportos with the mighty fist of ham. He can’t understand what he’s looking at when he watches sportsball but Batiuk sure as hell can understand wanting to show the more powerful people that one day, he’ll be the important one.

Bull be all like “concuss me now, bitch.”

Once again, I got a chuckle out of Crankshaft today. Like a gopher seeing his shadow, this heralds three more weeks of chilly, dark, plodding and unfunny Funky Winkerbean.

    • Rusty Shackleford

I did too. Nice to get a laugh from a Batty strip.

      • Comic Book Harriet

I think it’s only fair, since we rag on him so much, to actually point out when a strip works.

        • Rusty Shackleford

Yeah, I’ve mentioned several times how much I enjoyed his earlier stuff, including John Darling.

Batty has some talent, he just wastes it by trying to hard to be artsy so he can win awards.

    1. Hey Batiuk, the face cage for the Cardinals of that era was gray and not red… Also that cage pattern isn’t legal or safe by any stretch of the imagination…

    2. You know, I was halfway willing to give Hank Hill a pass on wearing his patent leather letterman’s jacket to a once-a-year game against his biggest high school rival… But now he’s even more pathetic than the average fifty-something teenager who graduated from Westview….

    • ian'sdrunkenbeard

That letter jacket is the most expensive piece of clothing Buck ever bought, and by god, he’s going to get his use out of it! Bull wears his helmet to protect himself from the noogies that Buck always rains down on his fragile gourd.

    • Rusty Shackleford

Buck does kind of look like Hank Hill

    • Have to give Tom Batiuk a pass on coloring. For some reason the coloring of King Features dailies is out of the hands of the actual cartoonists. The colorizers don’t seem to do much research or even necessarily read the text of the comic strip.

“Bull, I’m going to show Buck the new curtains I put up in the bedroom. We’ll be right back…”
