I am woman, hear me bore

Hi folks! I’m billytheskink and here is the link to today’s strip. Much thanks to Epicus for taking us into a a new year of the same old. I’ll try to take us through the next two weeks of the same old. Hmmmmm…

And so we return to Atomic Comix… where everything remains as it was in 2018. The comics are still lame, the smirks are still infuriating, all of 3 people still work in its decrepit multi-floor building in central Cleveland, Pete and Durwood still actively avoid doing work (they haven’t finalized key details of a named character?), and Mindy still shocks the comics industry by being female.

Well, Pete has traded in the traveling green shirt for an ill-fitting Han Solo costume. That’s new.

Bored on the 4th of July

Mindy halfway accuses Creepy Pete of plagiarism in today’s strip, something I actually enjoyed in concept. I would probably have enjoyed it in execution too if it was not wrapped in a dreadful gag about it being surprising that a woman would know comic book minutiae.

The gag, such as it is, falls apart if you assume that Pete has chatted about Mindy with her ex-boyfriend, his good high school buddy Eric “Mooch” Myers, who knows full well that there was a time not too long ago when she was not at all interested in comic books.

CS4-30-2007

Of course, why would anyone assume that? Who even remembers that Mindy dated Mooch back in high school or that she and Pete met at least once during that time? Not the author of this strip, I can tell you that.

Have a safe and happy July 4th, SOSFers! Don’t do anything Funky wouldn’t do… except smile, you can do that.

This SoSF shift is dedicated to LFB, always my # 1 fan

What did I ever do to deserve this? The (sigh) Atomik Komix gang is back and apparently they’re already being henpecked and overworked. No one saw THAT coming, eh? “Commander Comet”…”Rip Tide”…”The Pulp”…sigh.

Tom Batiuk doing arcs about the exhausting demands of being a “big time” comic writer is pretty funny when you think about it. Maybe it’s some kind of subconscious or subliminal guilt trip, I dunno. Or maybe he’s just trying to convince everyone that he’s putting way more into this than he actually does, although no one who actually reads it is ever going to buy that.
