After a six day stretch of Montoni’s pizza ‘n’ coffee with a side of band candy, Batiuk serves up a palate cleanser in the form of a sideway Sunday Atomik Komix kover. These Sunday treats typically consist of artwork by Batiuk’s comics buddies (this one’s the third or so from “America’s [and northeast Ohio’s] Thom Zahler” and colorist Rob Ro). Batiuk’s contibution, if there’s any, is what our Epicus Doomus dubbed a “reality bubble”: a little vignette of one or more FW characters doing or saying something that provides context for perplexed Sunday-only print readers of Funky Winkerbean.
“Reality bubbles” in most cases are inserted at the bottom of the vertical frame, almost as an afterthought. Today’s bubble in at the upper right hand corner, and is so large it renders the comic’s title as “KY KERBEAN” (what a silly name for a comic strip). All this real estate so that Batiuk can throw shade at Trump, with a jab vague enough that he could write it a year in advance and folks would still smirk knowingly like Ruby is smirking here. As for the Wayback Wendy cover itself? It pretty much gives away the resolution of the story, doesn’t it? Looks like successfully delivers the speech (written on an envelope, natch) to Honest Abe in time not to disrupt history.
Well, this is one crowded cover: the Atomik Komix Krossover that nobody asked for. We see our heroines and a dog fleeing on a motorized trike from a giant mechanized Nazi. The art’s not bad, but the muddy, muted colors and the Photoshop lighting effects don’t exactly make it pop.Like the first Miss American cover we saw back in September, this is not the work of a female artist; it’s by Thom Zahler, another Ohioan (maybe Ohio is a “thriving hotbed of Golden Age comic book activity” after all).
Link To Today’s StripAnd my super-sized guest host stint finally comes to a merciful end. What a garbage dump THAT was. There’s a good reason why we typically do two weeks at a time…simple human endurance. Stay tuned as billytheskink takes over for the first brand new story arc of 2020!

In his futile attempt to capture how nutty and zany “women” are, BatJerk has once again written himself into yet another contradiction…a stupid nonsensical contradiction. Just YESTERDAY Mindy was all sorts of nervous and insecure about her work, yet today she goes completely batshit stark raving mad over a mere suggestion. So she’s unsure of herself and worried about the quality of her work AND deeply protective of that work, all at the same time! Why, if I didn’t know any better I’d quite possibly assume that Mindy is at best a poorly-thought out character and at worst just plain stupid. But THAT certainly couldn’t be…could it???

It’s hilarious because she’s a woman and you know how “they” are, always all insecure and mixed-up and such. Sigh. This is what happens when you hire writers who’ve NEVER WRITTEN A SINGLE THING IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE. Then again, SOME “writers” have forty-seven years worth of experience and still somehow manage to cock everything all up, so there you go.
“Wayback Wendy”…man, that really stinks even by FW comic book sub-universe standards. That makes “Rip Tide” seem like sheer genius in comparison. What does Wendy do, go back in time and re-visit high school? And if so, why not just call it “Wendy Winkerbean”? Who’d even know the difference?
Link To Today’s Strip
Oh f*cking yuck. Just repellent. Are we to believe these two imbeciles are working on comic books at midnight on New Year’s Eve? Why? Oh…yeah…that’s right. Sigh.
Today’s strip wasn’t available for preview.
For once, I can at least give you all a preview of today’s strip, gleaned from the “Pipeline” of Batiuk’s blog. Just picture this illustration colored in…hell, color it in yourself, it might land you a new career! Picture the “Funky Winkerbean” header at the top, with Ruby’s or Mindy’s smug, disembodied head alongside the logo. Superimpose “Wayback Wendy” in huge, distorted digital type, across the top of the cover, and don’t forget the Atomik Komix “fallout shelter” in the upper left. At the bottom, throw in a single, round panel showing Mindy and Ruby congratulating each other on the success of their brilliant joint production. Lastly, give a “tip of the Funky Felt Tip” to the artist (not a woman) who contributed the artwork.
Update: Yeah, so I was wrong…rather than a sideway Sunday comix cover, only a portion of the artwork above is used. Unless Batiuk “disappears” Ruby, now that she’s served her purpose, maybe down the road it’ll get the full Atomik Komix treatment. –TFH

Yes, there has been a noticeable U-turn in the Funkyverse of late. Previously people’s efforts seemed mostly to end up in failure and disappointment. Now characters seem to succeed without much effort, experience, or training.
(A “perfect” summary of This Week in Funky Winkerbean:)
An so, in that way that things have of just working themselves out in the Funkiverse, Ruby Lith returns to comics (or are comics returning to her?), and Mindy adds de facto writer to her resume, right below de facto colorist.
And now there’s no bathroom in the Atomik office? But Jessica recently complained that the bathroom there were never clean. Rather than call out TB for another lapse, let’s suppose that there is a bathroom in the office; Pete just doesn’t want to have to share it with this old crone.

I’m gonna guess that Batiuk’s plan is for Ruby to be soooo inspired that this WOMAN is making a WOMAN comic character and they’ll do a collab comic because something something feminism something something give Batiuk an award.
No awards, though, for the many of you who saw this turn of events coming from a mile away. Despite the little “surprise lines” emanating from her Commie cap, Ruby Lith, too, knows this is destiny, and was only dropping Darin’s name to be polite.
